Quality zoom for 5D ?

Just pushed the boat out and bought a Canon 5D. Need help on zoom to suit. I have tried the Canon 17-40 L....lovely...but a bit too wide(with the full frame sensor) for my needs. Was thinking about Tamron 28-75 , but would really like a quality performer as the 5D will show up any duff lenses. Had even thought about some of the "older" film camera lenses !, like the Tokina atx Pro range.

I still have a 17-40 L and 70-200 L from my 10D days, but for a few months I've had the 24-105 IS L and on my 5D I use it just about 98% of the time. I love it and the IS. YMMV.

I've been very happy with my 5d and the 24-105L USM IS Canon. Photos are nice and crisp at anything past f/5.6

I have the 5D and the Tokina ATX Pro 20-35mm f/2.8.  I have many reservations about this combination.  The Tokina gave me excellent results with my 35mm A2E.  Unfortunately the 5D brought the worst out of this lens.  The problem wit my lens is blue fringing which is very noticeable.  Unfortunately, the focal lens does not help even if you close it down.

i am very happy with the 24-105 as an all-round lens with the 5D

it does vignet pretty badly at f4 24mm and noticeable at 5.6
a bit soft from 24-40, but very sharp at the long end

if you're photographing action in low light, then the 24-70 f2.8 will be better, but then heavier and not as useful all-round

i was very suprised to find that my old 24-85 is nearly as sharp as the 25-105 (with the same vignetting) - a nice, light walking around lens in good light

Same here. For an all around lens (if I had to travel with just one), this is it. Could be a bit faster but then, that's why I got the 35mm 1.4, big difference speed wise.

The 24-105 is a great lens, not heavy and sharp.

The 24-105 is a great travel and walk around lens.  I just returned from a 3 week shoot in Eastern Europe.  This lens was by far the most used dslr lens.
