just downloaded and started to play

have a reasonable explanation of how the new sharpening works and clarity, but don't understand exactly what the following are doing:

Fill light?
Recovery?
Vibrance?

is there a good explanation somehwere?

Fill light?        ----->  Fills dark areas with light
Recovery?     ----->  Tries to save highlights from burning
Vibrance?      ----->  Smart saturation (more saturation in low saturation areas)

so in 4.1 we've got a mix of capabilities - some perhaps superior to PS (sharpening), some similar like (Fiill Light), and some bundled up in potentially convenient ways (recovery, vibrance)

but it's not obvious to me (except perhaps for sharpening) which result in a better edited image or superior workflow

if i can get a very good image out of RAW, that's great, on the other hand if i've got to go back and tweak, now i've got to go to the RAW image and start over

ps - thanks phuong

Any reason that Vibrance is not a layer filter in Photoshop?

/same with fill light and recovery - would make life a bit more...consistent

Can't you make the conversion a smart object (or whatever they call it) and change it when you want?

Good point. However, I was thinking of opening a TIFF/JPEG file and having the same amount of functionality available as an adjustment layer rather than having to open the TIFF/JPEG in ACR.

Secondly, I am not finding smart objects much fun. Seems good principle but the practice is working out a little more fooky - maybe I just need more practice.

Is there a way to do transforms and crops on smart objects so that I can (a) change the underlying image and have the transform automatically apply itself (b) apply a crop and then change the crop without loosing out-of-crop image data? (e.g. for repurposing 4x6 to 8x10 image size).
