Camera Raw 4.1 story
« on: May 31, 2007, 03:05:14 am »

I've posted a story about the new Camera Raw 4.1 update with details on the new controls. See: About Camera Raw 4.1

I only wish Bruce was here to see what he helped create...but he knew what was going to happen and his finger prints are all over the new Sharpening controls...

Wow, that is a really big improvement in ACR 4.1. And a god story on the new version. Is it a
resonably guess that this also will show up in LR 1.1? I'm more or less only using LR as a raw
converter these days...

Yes it will be as Jeff Schewe stated in the article. ACR 4.1 is really amazing. It does now nearly everything I really want it to do.

Now I would only whish PS3 and ACR would have a type of Lightrooms target adjustment tool, but Ok that is another story.

I downloaded and installed my 4.1 update yesterday and this is very helpful in using the new controls.  It is, as you say a BIG update and I really enjoyed the story with all the human elements included too.

Schewe
I've been following Scott Kelby's tip on a podcast to convert my images from RGB to LAB and then apply USM to the Lightness channel only. Then I convert back to RGB prior to printing. I take it that the changes you describe in your article on the new sharpening controls in ACR 4.1 preclude this technique.

I'll have to have a word with Scott about this, bad idea. Not necessary, leads to a good deal of damage on 8-bit files due to the conversions into and out of Lab.

Keep the file in RGB, fade Luminosity. Faster, no damage, opacity slider control. We need to keep Scott farther away from Dan Margulis!

Thanks for the writeup.  I was wondering about the sharpening and noise reduction.

The defringing thing is a godsend.  My tokina 12-24 was about to go to ebay.  Now I can keep using it.  Does it work with jpegs?  Being able to run my Fuji f10 (the "f" stands for "fringing") through it would be great.

I can delete my "local contrast" action!

I can finally stop mourning RSP.  Although I do miss RSP's speed ACR 4.1 is just so much nicer.

Very pleased.

Schewe,

Great article! I've been waiting for the dust to settle on CS3 before upgrading, but this convinces me that now is the time. Thanks for posting it.

While you're at it, how about writing a book on how to use the CS3 tools that are useful for photographers. Your writing and examples are a model of clarity.

Regards,

That is a very nice article, Jeff, and a very nice set of new features in ACR. I particularly like the local contrast enhancement, it's something I do all the time and it's about time it got its own control. Also the capture sharpening is in the right place. Now if we could just have a way to apply some real ICC input profiles ... I think I'll send you my arguments off-line to try and convince you.

Jeff,

I read the article today and ejoyed it very much.  Of course, well written with great example images.

One question is how would you compare the results with the new sharpening tools in 4.1 with the results obtained with PK Sharpener in PS?  I use PKS and have been thrilled with it's capabilites and the results I achieve.  But if sharpening in the raw conversion will produce for me still better results I am willing to change my ways.

Look forward to your insights.
