Mac Laptop - schoolboy questions..

I tend to plug and play when it comes to computers - I prefer taking pictures.

I need help with a couple of simple upgrades for my Mac laptop

Quastion 1..

It is currently running 10.3.9

how do I upgrade to 10.4 or higher

Question 2..

I need an FTP sofware

can any one recomend one

can I use photomechanic

Q1: Do a full backup before. Use an external HD and free software like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper (free for full backup) to do it. Be aware that the next version of Mac OS X will be out in October, you may want to delay your Mac OS X 10.4 purchase?
The update process is pretty much straightforward, disconnect all your external peripherals (except mouse & keyboard), put the 10.4 DVD into your Mac, restart your Mac and keep the C key pressed to boot on the 10.4 DVD and follow the instructions.

Q2: Transmit is my favorite but others products such as Yummy FTP, Interarchy, Fetch are also available, this list is not exhaustive.
Cyberduck is a free alternative.

You can find software by using either www.macupdate.com or www.versiontracker.com

Q3: PhotoMecanic is available for both Macs & PCs.

No, Apple has no "upgrade path"... You always have to purchase the full version.  

I'm not familiar enough with PM about the FTP thing.

Amazon has Mac OS X at $116 (10.4.6) or $75 (for the original 10.4, upgrades to 10.4.x are free and done over the internet via software update application).
