Sensor Cleaning Devices - Favorite?
« on: May 24, 2007, 07:15:53 am »

I've recently purchased the Phase One P-45 (Plus is on order) and wanted opinions on the best devices to use for cleaning the sensor.

I use the P-45 on the Hasselblad 503CW and it is frequently altered between horizontal and vertical percpectives in the field (I do primarily landscape work).

Your suggestions and lessons learned would be appreciated.

Dear Jack,

since nobody is answering to you.

I have been told by many DMF back users, that the best cleaning system is the Sinar "Digital Cleaning Kit", even on non-Sinar backs.

I believe this for having tried a couple of others.

You can have this from any Sinar distributor (Item NĀ° 551.33.090): it consist of a set of Micro Fiber Cleaning Cloths, an "Agent Blue" liquid for removing stains and Ethanol 95% for a regular and clean surface without any traces, and a tool to wipe the IR filter regularely and on the whole surface.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Thierry

I have the Visable Dust Brush from [a href=\"http://www.visibledust.com/]http://www.visibledust.com/[/url]
I originally purchased this for my Canon. But it works totally great on my Phase One back.
It is a dry application.
Unless you have a real smudge or some kind of grease on it, this works great.
You just charge the brush by blowing on the brush with canned air and do a couple of swipes over the glass cover on the sensor. I just do it before each shoot and almost never have to clone out dust spots anymore. I don't ever use the canned air directly on the chip.

It's my understanding the kit comes with cleaning supplies from Phase.  I'll be finding out later today and will post again.

I always try to not use any of the wet cleaning systems unless I really need to. like a fingerprint or something. Maybe it is just me, but evertime I end up with some kind of new smudge from the cleaning process and have a difficult time getting back to pristine again. I tried the Phase supplied kit once and it is very gooey stuff. just my own 2 cents though

The digiclean that is supplied with the Phase backs does a good job...I find it much easier to clean a mfdb than a dslr body. Calumet here in NYC has the kit for thirty bucks.

I use a P25 with a 500c/m body and on a Cambo WDS. I find using a rocket blower frequently is the best way to keep the sensor clear of dust and allows me to go much longer between wet cleanings.

I use Carl Zeiss lens cleaning fluid and Kodak lens paper. It works very well.

On a 1DSII I use the Arctic Butterfly - That works too but not so effectively as there always seems to be a stray speck or two left behind.

One of the great things about MFDB's is that you can take them off the camera body and really have a go at removing the dust. Sometimes, especially if I'm in a sandy or desert environment I'll use a blower as airborne particles tend to be more abrasive. On a recent job in Crete I was quite surprised how much of the Sahara blowing across from Africa via the mediterranean was ending up on my sensor; needless to say the blower helped a lot and is probably as useful as the wet cleaning materials if you work outdoors.

I second the sinar cleaning kit, it's outstanding.  I use it on my Imacon back whenever the rocket blower doesn't do it.  When shooting outside in dust environments, I also wrap 1/4 inch black photo tape around the camera where the adapter meets the camera body of my cambo wide ds.  This helps a little with the dust.

Peace,
Weldon

Didn't the Phase One also supply the cleaning kit with the back? The kit contain 2 liquid solution, one for cleaning the surface and one for 2nd stage cleaning. Supplied with the kit is some cleaning tissue and a hard plastic pick that you can wrap the cleaning tissue around it for cleaning.
I switch the back between Contax 645 and Alpa SWA12 and each time I did so I usually use air blower to clean it. Before a cirtical assignment, I always shoot the white reference first to find any particle or dirt on the CCD so I make sure I clean them before job.

Phase One does provide the Digiclean with a 3 year warranty back.  It is a great cleaner for the really hard to remove spots, otherwise I go with Eric's recommendation of the rocket blower.  We also ask people to put a small piece of plastic between the caps once they are open.  They tend to leak a bit after they are opened.
