Eye-One i0
« on: May 20, 2007, 03:07:33 am »

I recently purchased an Eye-One i0 to go with my Eye-One UV cut.  I'm hoping to get better profiles than the canned ones most paper makers offer, as well as learn more about the process.

Perhaps my expectations are too high, but I am frustrated the device does not seem to be very useful.  I have been using Bill Atkinson's 4096 patch targerts, and trying to profile Kodak Professional Lustre surface paper.  Using Measure Tool from PM 5.0.8 the device will not read the entire set of patches unless I use patch mode (which takes hours  ... like 2 or 3 to read 1 page of patches).

I've contacted GM and their response was sort of a flippant "why do you need to read that many patches".  Really none of their business, but I certainly didn't need a $2k device to save me the 2 minutes it takes to read a 918 patch test.

At this point I don't know whether my device is underperforming, or if it really is fairly useless when reading anything more than about 2000 patches.  Anyone out there with any experience with the device?  Am I wasting my time (and money)?

Wayne, perhaps you can elaborate on exactly what steps you're doing.

I have been able to print and scan/read Atkinson's 4096 patch targets as well as his 1728 patch target (which I use more often, actually), very reliably in strip-mode. I assume you're following steps similar to these:

http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/i1...gets/index.html

I also use an Eye-One Pro UV Cut.

The iO sure is nice for automation, but you shouldn't have any problem using the Eye-One Pro hand-held to read in strip-mode. There's something else going on ...

Please elaborate and then maybe we can see what's going on.

Why don't  you create your own targets ? Create your own 4000 patch target for the iO than print them and read them. It works really really fast.

I'm using the same target of Bill's on my i0 with no issue so something else is going on. Takes maybe 5 minutes to read the four pages. There's no reason you should be in patch mode. Did you update the firmware? Does this happen with all targets (or just this paper/printer)? Is the EyeOne a Rev A or B?

That did it.  Thought I had updated the firmware, but when I ran the installer again it said the table had 1.01 in it.  Updated to 1.04 and it read the chart perfectly.

Kind of surprising GM tech didn't mention this.

Thanks
