Photo Rag Pearl on Z3100
« on: May 10, 2007, 12:05:38 pm »

Just got my first samples of Photo Rag Pearl for printing on my Z3100. Anyone have any experience using this paper with this printer?

I'm just creating my profile, used the new 'Fine Art Pearl' media type. Is this the best media type for this paper? Hahnemuhle haven't updated their handing instructions PDF for this paper, but they specify their Fine Art Pearl paper should be used with the 'Photo Semi-Gloss / satin' media type. I'm not sure if this is because when they wrote that document the new 'Fine Art Pearl' media type wasn't in the firmware yet.

Any recommendations for gloss enhancer on or off with this paper?

Cheers,
Peter

Peter,
I found an HP reference link on the Hahnemuhle site here:
[a href=\"http://www.hahnemuehle.com/site/us/1607/hewlett-packard.html]http://www.hahnemuehle.com/site/us/1607/hewlett-packard.html[/url]

Then another here:
http://h41186.www4.hp.com/country/us/en/su...?pageseq=558871

and then one directly on the HP site to download icc profiles and there is a media download (middle column) with your printer listed, here:
http://h41186.www4.hp.com/country/us/en/do...?pageseq=558872

The "icc profile" on the HP site does not show your printer, but the middle column does and perhaps this link would help you use that paper correctly. It looks like HP has "partnered" with Hahnemuhle for paper development ?

I don't like this paper on the Z Maybe they fixed the incompatibility but until I have proof, I can't recommend it.
Innova (the recent ones) on the other hand is excellent.

Neil -
What don't you like about it on the Z3100? I've made a few prints now and have been pleased with the results.

Sorry but I have to disagree here. All Innova papers I tried on my z3100 were a disaster, bad gamut often striped and other stuff.

After that I tried both HM Pearl papers. HM PR Pearl and Fine Art Pearl.

I really love both, especially the HM PhotoRag Pearl, is fantastic. Very large Gamut, good black values. It now is my new standard paper.

I created two profiles one with the Fine Art Pearl setting and one with the glossy setting. I prefer the Glossy setting.

Another thing to add, that I prefer HM when it comes to paper standard. Sorry but I had so many problems with Innova and there recent papers (F-Type), black dots on them, striped even before printing. In my eyes Innova really should work on there quality control.

There service is still great, got all bad papers replaced, BUT that shouldn't be necessary.

Thanks for the input. I too have been very impressed with the gamut of PR Pearl. You can see my initial reaction to it, including gamut plots comparing it with the original Photo Rag here: http://www.petercox.ie/blog/2007/05/moving...a_new_paper.php

Christopher -
I just made a profile for Photo Rag Pearl with the 'photo semi-gloss/satin' paper type and here's a gamut comparison between that and the one I made with the 'fine art pearl' media type.

Wireframe is the fine art pearl, flat is semi-gloss. I didn't include anything but the one view, but you get the idea. Semi-gloss gives you better blues and greens (blues seem to be much deeper, especially in the dark areas) and fine art pearl gives you better reds, oranges and yellows.

Seems like it's a bit of a tradeoff depending on what colours in your image you're looking to maintain. I look forward to experimenting over the next few weeks.

Cheers,
Peter

How do you add the fine Art Pearl media setting to the fimware/driver?  been off the forum for a few weeks so i am probably asking the obvious!
