Unable to Edit metada

Hi,
After accidentally altering date of capture for a bunch of photos I am unable to alter them back. Although they physically reside in correctly dated folders on hard drive, they show up incorrectly in metadata browser. I have tried altering back via " alter Capture date", It does not seem to work. Can anyone give me a hand with this. Much appreciated in advance.
