503CW or H2 for Phase One P45+
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:41:10 pm »

I'm currently shooting the 503 CW with the 50, 100 and 150 CFI lenses.  Using the P45 back, waiting for delivery of my plus.  All work is landscape.  Always shoot on tripod so speed of shooting is not an issue.  Just concerned with the final digital image quality and sharpness/contrast.

Wondering if anyone has done critical tests between the Zeiss lenses on a P-45 back and the Fuji lenses offered for the H1-3 family of bodys?

Pondering whether I should move to the H series or stick with my 503 and Zeiss glass.

For dependability, I would stick with the V mount 503 CW.  They are rock solid!

Chris,
You've got a very valid point, and one less set of batteries to charge.  Considering I take off for 4-6 weeks out in the wilderness or in a foreign country, failure of the camera body could be a serious problem.

Yet I wonder about the quality of the lenses for digital work from Fuji verse Zeiss's older lenses.

I did recently read that Zeiss was going to be introducing a line of lenses optimized for the digital backs later this year.  Price may be a bit of a fright, but then the Fuji's don't come cheap either.

Since you're already shooting with the P45 and a few 'V' lenses what's your feeling?

Do the files you're shooting look like they're missing something where sharpness
and fine detail,of the sort typically found in landscape work,is concerned.

I've used V lenses and non-digital large-format lenses (on the ArcBody) frequently with
the P25 and can't see where hsarpness was ever an issue for scenic work.
I can't imagine that the same optics on a P45 would be noticeably compromised.

Mark

I switched from the V to H for my P45 and am very pleased I did.  For me the major advantages are much less lens cast and autofocus.  H also handles a lot better.

The Fuji glass is outstanding. I use the 100mm f2.2 and love it. I think the 50mm is the only H series lens to get a bad press from time to time. The 35mm is superb right across the frame and the 210 is wonderful wide open at f4. At f11+ the story might be different for all these lenses so you need to consult another landscape shooter or do your own tests.

Once you've made your choice don't look over your shoulder and wonder if you've made the right decision, just get out there and make great pictures.

Great pictures on your site, not my line of work but I enjoyed looking at them.

There is nothing better out ther than a 'V' 40CFEIF/ 50CFI/ 60CFI/ 100CFI/ 180CFE. Anyone who says the Fuji lenses are sharper are talking ......  They may be different but no better, and i for one would not change to an 'H' from a 'V' for any money, i would look at Contax if a 645 style camera is required, otherwise stay with the 'V', as previously noted they are rock solid.

Thanks folks for input.
Decision:  I'll stick witht he 503CW/V System.

I just received a mint 40 CFE IF T* and had last weekend to test it out.
WOW, a very nice improvement over the 50 in contrast and saturation with my P-45 back.  Plus, the 40mm gives me that little extra width that I've wanted on several occasions and found missing in the 50mm.
In short, very pleased with it, other than it's price!

Hopefully, we'll see more Zeiss updated lenses coming out in the future that match the 40mm CFE IF.  They can start with the 100 and 150 and I'll be delighted!

Hasselblad V System Lens:
1. 2.8/300 FE PP
2. 2.0/110 FE
3. 4.0/40 CFE IF
4. 4.0/180 CFE

If you could get the 203 FE or the 205 FCC converted for digital now you can use the first two lens on the list.

The Contax 645 system will give you the most dampen mirror vibration and with an adapter it will take all of the Hasselblad V lens and combine with the Contax 645 system lens with auto focus now you have the highest optics you are looking for your system.

Jack:
Is that a new version you're talking about? If so, what is the difference and improvements over the "older" CFE?
Thx
Eduardo
