Print Howto for newbies?
« on: April 26, 2007, 10:39:12 am »

Hello, I am getting my Epson R1800 tomorrow! I am so excited. However, I have no idea what to do when I get it home. Sure I can hook the thing up and install the software on my Windows machine, but when it comes to printing the proper way I have no idea what to do.

Is there a guide on how to use print profiles or anything like that? Something like a best practices on printing photos in Photoshop.

Things I am confused about:
Printer profiles: Does each paper have its own? How do I tweak it?
Do I convert to CYMK or stick with RGB?
Whats the first thing I should do to make sure the colors match up?

Thanks!

It won't help you right now, but we have a major video tutorial on printing under production, to become available this summer.

In the meantime there are a number of good web pages and books on the subjct. A bit of searching will turn them up.

Sounds awesome. I did some searches and everything I read seems to be really random. I was hoping for maybe a link to a article like "Best practices for printing at home for photographers" .

All the things I have found were random small tips, nothing in the means of a good article.

Yes, you need one profile per paper/printer. To tweak profiles, you'll need some specialized software and experience.

Stick to RGB, the printer driver converts to whatever color mode (ex: CcMmYKk for a 2200) your printer needs.

Profile your monitor and read some good books like Andrew Rodney's Color Management for Photographers (a sample chapter is provided on Andrew's website).

Kodak provides a very good pdf file on workflow directions in using icc profiles, here at the Kodak site, for Photoshop users:

http://download.kodak.com/professional/man...w_PShop_CS2.pdf

The information from Kodak can easily be applied to other papers and profiles for those papers.
Red River Paper provides a very good information and inkjet tips page for profiling information and color management here:

http://www.redrivercatalog.com/infocenter/tips/index.htm

THe page entitled "Color Profiles 101" should be helpful, linked from the page above.

If Tim had not already pointed you at ian Lyons' web site, I would have.  It has complete, easy-to-use tutorials for how to set up your printer settings.  Second vote for it...
