Converting TIFFS to B&W in PS
« on: April 22, 2007, 01:07:24 pm »

It's been a while since i've done any B&W conversions - probably the last time i used PS, as I do all of my processing using Canon's DPP.  My initial b&W conversions were done just changing the picture style setting, however, i found i got much better results using the channel mixer in PS Elements 2.

Last time i converted some portraits to B&W I used the channel mixer, but the problem is that don't remember the process i followed or the settings i used (it's been almost a year).

I'd appreciate if someone could help me with a refersher on using the Channel Mixer to convert my files to B&W as well as with getting a workflow to convert TIFF files (that were created by converting raw files in DPP), to B&W Jpegs. All are portraits. Is there a fast way to batch process these TIFFs in PS Elements 2, so that i can do the intital channel mixer settings

Part 2 of my Digital BW series covers the channel mixer.

In PS you could create an action and batch process your tiffs to get what you want but I don't know of a way of automating Elements.

Russell Brown also has an excellent tutorial on the channel mixer plus a couple of other techniques that you may be interested in here:  Russell Brown
Just scroll down to "Black & White Variations"

Thanks Daniel and Ed for the links.

I also know why i couldn't find the channel mixer in PSE 2 - it doesn't exist.  On my Mac i only have PSE 2.  whereas i had PS 7 for my PC.

Wood,

Good tip!  Yes, those numbers do work well for certain film looks and it is quite easy to build 14 actions for easy application.  The only science is then trying to properly replicate the film grain.
