reviews of Canon Pro 9500 compared to HP B9180
« on: April 17, 2007, 03:18:53 pm »

Can anyone help me. I have followed some of the threads concerning troubles with HP B9180. I am going to invest in a  quality printer and so I should like to know if there has been some REAL testing of the Canon Pro 9500. And what is the verdict. Is it safe to buy the one or the other.

The Canon 9500 has not been released yet - probably not till end of May. I was in the same dilemma as you. Especially since photo-i gave its "sister" printer the 9000, which uses dye inks, such a good review. However, having seen the poor treatment purchasers of the ipf 5000 were given, I opted for the HP. It's got great manuals and the "kinks" are getting ironed out in the latest iterations. As for the longevity of the pigments, HP wins hands down at 250 to 100 years (as if any of us will know or care  ). I'm sure the 9500 will be capable of producing great prints as well but I refuse to reward corporate arrogance with support.

Actually, the 9500 prints are only rated at 30 years when displayed.  The HP 9180 has far superior technology, and on paper looks like a much better value.

Are you sure it's not the 9000 that's rated at 30? The 9500 is not out yet but extrapolating from the recently released WIH data on the ipf 5000 which uses the same pigment inks (but 12 instead of 10) as in the 9500 I've assumed 100 years.

9500 is not released yet . It uses Lucia pigment inks and based on the new report for this ink , longevity is around 100 years. Not bad. But HP Vivera ink has a much higher rating.

HP B9180 has got a very good review, including LL and Photo-i.
For the 13" still it is the king.  Soon we will see how Canon 9500 is going to compete with it.  will be a really big challenge for Canon.

Thanks for opinions. The lifetime of the prints is perhaps not the most important. The regularity of the printer is crucial. I have just visited Canons site regarding specifications. The cartridges are only 13 ml, and they claim a 5% coverage will suit 150 prints. With my colorful prints (some of them are art-work) this will correspond to perhaps only 10 pages per cartridge, which is on the low side.

Well , Hp B9180 has 27mil inks . But your real saving for inks will be switching for 17" printers . 17" printers will cost more and need bigger space and each with their own pros and cons.
If you may consider a 17" here is a good link to check:

Thanks Avalan
That link gives you food for thouoghts. But then there is the "minor" issue of price. The Epson 3800 is double the HP B9180 and the canon IPF5000 is three times.
17" I would love it. At the moment I have access to a DesignJet 500ps. It is pretty good, but I dont have any profiles and the print will probably fade away.

Hi Jorgen

Yes . 17" printers are more costly. but they have lots of pros :
1-You can print larger.
2-Probably have a better built since they are designed for heavier use. (Pro 13" printers are designed for photographers with lighter usage)
3-Lower cost for ink. etc

If you are still consideing a 17" printer , I would suggest Epson3800 or CanonIPF5000.
They Both have their pros and cons. The major things to consider when comparing the two printers for your need would be Weight and size , and roll feed unit.
Epson 3800 is more compact than CanonIPF5000 and much lighter so it is better for a small space.  5000 has roll feeder unit and 3800 uses the sheets and no roll feeder. and as I remember, 3800 can print borderless on sheets and 5000 can print borderless just on the rolls and not sheets.

Prices of these printers strongly depends on which country you reside , and offers are completley differrent. In the US You can buy each of them for about $1400.

If you need the list of suppliers offering for this price , I can post the links.

Please read and examine the reports for 3800 and 5000 and find out which one may work better for you.

Regards

Thanks Avalan
I am living in Denmark. So the US-suppliers (for delivery) and costums would probably add an unreasonable amount to the US-offerings. Service over the tlantic is also a bit difficult. I will be looking into the tests. The 3800 sounds most priceworthy; at least here in Denmark

Yes.  For you the better choice is the Danish market and US market can not be an option.

Epson 3800 has got good reviews. I guess the profiles coming with this printer , have been rated better than the profiles coming with 5000.

Good luck - Avalan

Good luck with your printer Jorgen . You may consider it the best choice for 13" printer.

For other visitors looking for reviews  of HP Pro 9180 , these are the links :

http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/prin.../HP-B9180.shtml

Don't have information about "Monochrome Company".
These are some general hints when looking for a paper :

There are so many paper manufacturers producing all kind of papers for inkjets and it is always a challenge to find the best paper for a given project or to find the best price  for a specific paper. Companies specialized in supplying different brands of papers are usually the better place to buy from because of the following reasons :

A : you will have more options since they offer different brands and sizes and more variety of papers.
B: They have online sales with good delivery service.
C: Most of the time they will give you the best price for the paper they sell.
E: some of them may give you the option of custom cut papers.
D: They are knowledgeable about the papers and can answer your specific questions about the papers.

Having said these , it is good to consider few more things:

1- When decided on a specific paper , check for the prices to find the best deal.
2-The  final cost needs to address the Mailing cost.
3- In most cases your better deal would be buying the boxes with more sheets in it.

Happy printing

Just a follow up. I got my HP 9180 last tuesday and have made some prints. First I saw some ugly pizza wheels 5 rows, but they have disappeared after 3 prints. Hopes that it stays that way.
I am rather content with the little monster.

Neil Snape stated in an  other thread that the limitation of 44" length could be overvcome by Qimage.
I wonder how, because Qimage is using the printer driver to select the allowed sizes, so.... How do you circumvent this limitation (if you can). It is of course for printing stitched panoramas.
Best to all and back to my printer

Congratulation Jorgen

Hope you will be another happy user of your new printer.

About q-image  : Don't have it yet but it is in the menu to be ordered soon.
Whatever I have read and remember about Q-image , has been positive.  This is the link to some info in case if you have not seen it. (Not sure about your specific question)

Thanks Avalan and ThomasK
It is a very good link you send me Thomas (and fortunately I do speak and read german).
Avalan I just bought Qimage and it works like a dream with managening the printing. It is just the question about the length of the paper, but we'll find out somehow.
