I'm looking for a good editor to read and write EXIF-IPTC-XMP data to image files, especially Keywords & Descriptions. I want an editor that works with Photoshop files (PSD), and Canon Raw (CRW) in addition to jpg and tif. I believe this eliminates Opanda.

I'm currently using a trial version of Breeze Browser Pro, which works pretty well, but my web host (SmugMug) isn't picking up the data on most files - they have a feature to automatically display keywords & caption, but apparently it's looking at different data fields than those that BBP used.

I'd prefer something that will handle batch editing, for less than $50, but would also consider upgrading from Photoshop CS to CS3 (if it handles these functions well).

If you are testing a beta version of CS3, I'd appreciate hearing of your experience with this editing function, and the software in general.

I think I've found a suitable solution to my Caption-Keyword woes - well, two actually.

One is just to use Photoshop CS's File Browser - it's clunky but it works in terms of getting the captions & keywords to show up in my SmugMug galleries.

The other is a freebie windows add-on from Uncle Bill (microsoft) which works through Windows Explorer. It works with jpg, tif and both Nikon & Canon raw files.

I just ran a test file and for each of these and uploaded them to a gallery and IT WORKS! That means the caption and keywords embedded in the file were transferred to the appropriate gallery display, without having to enter them separately on the site.

I still plan to upgrade to PS CS3 when it comes out, but this will do for now.

I read that PhotoInfo trashed various files (raw and tiffs) but that was related to the version in Vista. Does any one know if the issue effected the XP version and if the issue has been fixed yet?

I have a 300D Rebel, and so far I haven't noticed a problem with PhotoInfo. It doesn't work with PSD files, which is inconvenient, but it does handle the raw. I'm running on an XP machine. I'll stay away from Vista for a while!

The Photoshop CS metadata editor, accessed via File>File Info (only works on an open file) works pretty well, and is more complete in its info display than PhotoInfo.

I just ordered CS3, which should be a few steps up from the first CS.

Bridge (CS2 version) utilise a different system to append XMP data to files via its file info dialogue - this resolves when the file is opened and resaved. We have just uploaded our new website which utilises custom XMP fields to upload to an online database used for image searching and this was an issue.

This looks like a great program, but I cannot get it to display iptc or exif data on jpg, camera raw, or psd files. All the fields are blank, even though the thumbnails display tags suggesting that info is there. I know it's there - I can readily view it in photoshop or photoinfo.

There is probably something simple I'm missing - seems to be the way with new programs - so I'll visit their forum when I have some time and see what I can find out.

I don't understand what you are saying here (like what it is that's resolving).

Your new site sounds interesting. Is the purpose to stock photo buyers?

Bridge appears to correctly add keywords but edited XMP data is stored in some sort of string (ie it doesn't use standard XMP protocols - which is logical as it doesn't open the image files so must 'tag' the data on somehow. Keywords clearly work differently) which CS2 recognises when an image file is opened, reorganises and when the image file is saved, restores to 'standard' XMP protocols which it then saves normally in the image file.

Our new site (www.marinewildlife.co.uk) uses XMP data to avoid us having to use a database (which is 'on-line' only as XMP data is used to build up the data when the image is uploaded) and is designed to sell my and other specialist marine life images to buyers who search in specific ways (we hope). Design was/is innovative (at present anyway!) and I hope, should be the way many more sites go in future - it makes so much sense to use embedded data in the image files rather than seperate databased info.

Thanks for the clarification, Paul. I like the idea and I like your sites - you have some great images there. I'm not diving these days, but I may have a few coastal shots you'd be interested in. I'll check back for your photog guidelines PDF.

You might like to try some software I wrote

iTag - http://www.itagsoftware.com

It batch edits IPTC and XMP fields in JPGs. The problem I found with most editors is that they are extremely powerful working on one photo at a time - but they are very slow trying to tag a bunch of photos from a weekend away say.
iTag is designed to be a simple editor but to work well tagging a batch of photos with similar keywords (photos all from the same event say).

Let me know what you guys think

The most powerful and flexible option is iMatch from Photools. This handles all the combinations discussed above.

the only way to delete EXIF data is to effectively read the original file and then re-write it without the exif data included. You can do with Photoshop, iMatch and I should guess many other programmes.

Assuming you still want to keep an original with metadata but upload a copy somewhere without - you could do a batch resize from irfanview, untick "Keep original EXIF" data and send the output to a different folder.

Thanks for the tip. I had a quick check to see if I could do this in CS3 but ran out of time (and ideas!) so must try again.

Yes, that's exactly what I want to do. Thanks, I must try that one too. I have a client who is an avid amateur (not used in a derogatory way - I like the stuff he does) but he pesters me about my settings. Be nice just to discuss the image rather than how did I do this, etc.
