Lightroom workflow- previews

What is the recommended workflow regarding previews?  It's my understanding that Lightroom works more efficiently when 1:1 previews are generated.  If that's so, then is there any benefit to creating standard previews upon import? (as importing would be faster without it)

(My first tasks after importing includes doing a quick edit and checking critical focus)

Thanks.

Printing in Draft mode for one. Really good idea to build them before you do this for quality and to get Adobe RGB (1998) out the back end (instead of sRGB).

Andrew -- if I am going to be creating 1:1 previews anyway after importing, won't that offer the same benefit as creating standard previews during the import process?
