5D operational questions
« on: April 03, 2007, 07:39:57 am »

i just purchased the 5D - will serve as my backup once my 1DIII comes in. Will be selling my xti and grip this weekend.

Right now I have only been trying to get used to the controls and have taken some test shots, (not much - that's planned for tonight after work). I haven't downloaded any files yet, as last night was just to get used to the controls using the double AA's while the batteries charged. SOme questions I was hoping people could help me with to make the transition easier:

1) for shooting weddings, how good is higher ISO with the 5D and what is the hightest ISO
that is suitable for enlargements???  What is the highest ISO that will give clean
pictures without the need of using noise reduction???

2) How accurately does the display reflect the selected picture styles???  I shoot RAW, but
I want to do as little processing afterwards as possible. I generally shoot using the
Standard setting (I find Portrait way to warm/red and neutral to blah for east indian skin
tones). By comparing the display of the 5D, the standard setting seems to be not as
warm on the display as the 1DIIN or xti. Generally I found the 1DIIN display fairly
representative of what i'd see later in DPP. So that's whay i wanted to know how
reflective is the colour,wb seen on the camera's display of the actual files???

3) what kind of battery life do you generally get out of 1 battery (I did buy the VG so I can
hold two batteries)???  Using two batteries in the grip, is it possible to know which
battery has been fully or almost fully used???  How reliable are off brand batteries for
the 5D (in calgary i've only seen an Enegizer one at the Futureshop whis is around $40
less thent the Canon)???

Initial impression is not all that positive (other then having a full frame point of view - is the viewfinder larger then the 1DIIN I sold my 1DIIN in anticipation of the 1DIII so I can't compare). One glaring weakness is that I find that the AF sucks (compared to the 1D2N) and i miss the extra customization of the 1D series offers (i.e. i can't use * key for focusing if I need to use Flash Exposure lock - but hey i have a direct print button that I may use once hell freezes over  i have to gripe on that, as i do anytime i pickup any canon camera

anyway, like i said this is initial observations, without acutally looking at actual files. it will only be my backup. I wanted to go full frame for a long time and I think this camera should be great for landscape. Originally I had planned to go full frame once canon updated the 5D, but with the futureshop price of the 5D plus the rebate, the cost is probably will end being at least $1000 less then the updated body (whenever it is released), and considering i'm already going to be spending money on the 1DIII, it makes it easier to get into full frame. anyways as a backup, it will certainly be better then the xti.

It looks like the 1DIII stole the AF selector from the 5D - which i'm hating - can't be used when shooting vertically why don't they have this availble on the vertical grip I hope the 1DIII isn't the same - you would think Canon would have dealt with this issue, if this feature is indeed the same on the 1DIII

anyways, that is just my first impression - one positive is that its nice having my wide lenses be wide again. it also helps getting a 5D for a price of $2650 CDN - almost half of what my 1DIII is going to cost   Not sure why this this camerais not on cps though

Here's a mini review I did when the camera first came out:
http://www.pbase.com/r_p/5d_notes

I regularly shoot at high ISO with no issues at all. 800 ISO prints fine as long as your exposure is good.

I'll write some more later (shooting right now...)

Here's a link to stuff I shot in relative darkness (some at high ISO) and they print beautifully:
