I'm leaving for california om may5th.....for 8 days.
Have never been there before...
Can anyone suggest some locations 1-2 hours from LA that I can take some pictures?
A few people have suggested driving up HWY 1.....the coastal HWY???

Depending on where and when you start in LA, in 2 hours you will still be in LA.

Up Hiway 1 (PCH) for 2 hours will get you to Malibu, maybe.  Some think that is still in LA.

If you are restricted to 1-2 hours away, I would forget about traveling and concentrate on the opportunities within the city.  There are photographic opportunities everywhere there.  You could spend all day just photographing at the Los Angeles Music Center.  Photographing out of your comfort zone can be a good thing.

If you drive up to Lone Pine it will take 3+ hours but the Alabama Hills are worth the trip.

See some shots from there here:

I'll agree with the person who suggested that there are plenty of cool places to shoot in LA if your time is limited. If you are into "urban" you won't be disappointed here. I've also had a lot of fun shooting the architecture (and people) at the Getty Museum.

Traffic can be awful in LA, but you can make it not quite so bad if you avoid the worst parts of rush hour. ("hour" - hah!) You should be able to get up the coast to the Santa Barbara area in the time frame you mention, and there is a lot to photograph there.

I'm a big (BIG!) fan of the desert and the eastern Sierra, so if time permits a trip out and up that way, go for it. Lone Pine gets you views of the eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, the White Mountains to the east, and some wonderful stuff in Owens Valley.

Have a great trip.

The Huntington Gardens are a good destination if you cannot drive far from LA.  They are located in San Marino which is next door to Pasadena.  There are many links to it on the web.  Here is the main one.  It will give you a good idea of what is there although the photographs at this link are mostly documentary :

You can get some truly beautiful photographs at the Huntington Gardens.  I couldn't find any link with artistic images of the Huntington, but I have met several photographers who have worked there and their images were wonderful.  It's on my list.  I'm not so big on cities otherwise I'd have visited a long time ago.  I tend to swerve towards either the Sierras or the desert each time I get near LA ;-)

I'll second Alain's suggestion for the Huntington Gardens. A couple of hours you have is a bit short to really get outside LA and spend time shooting on location.

I'd throw in another recommendation on both Getty and Huntington.

Here are some samples of what you might see:

In the City, the recently built Disney Music Hall in downtown next to the previously mentioned Music Center is an all metal skinned "organic shaped" building that does wonderful things to reflected light.  Google it and I'm sure you'll see photos that give you the idea.  Very enjoyable photographically.

An excellent Japanese Garden in the Sepulveda Basin in the San Fernando Valley.

Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills at night with great views of the lights of the City.

Venice Beach boardwalk and bike path for people watching.

A nice one day trip - two hours east is Palm Springs with an excellent outdoor desert museum plus an aerial tram ride 8,000 feet up Mt San Jacinto...desert and 100* temp at the bottom and 70* in pine forest at the top.  Spectacular panoramas.
