Camera Raw 3.7
« on: March 21, 2007, 09:57:07 am »

I could just die, cry, or give up all together. Uploaded Camera Raw 3.7 two days ago and didn't think anything of it. Tried to use it with Bridge yesterday and it's behaving completely different from the old Camera Raw. Couldn't find many of the old style options. Was this upgrade meant to be an improvement or just a nail in my coffin. Any suggestions that involve me living would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you certainly got our attention.

Raw 3.7, without any overt warning, came out to incorporate several of the features used in Lightroom.

I did not appreciate the automatic download since I would have never expected some of the changes to have a material effect on my workflow.

I especially dislike the "all or nothing" global auto setting. I use to like to check a box on or off here and there just to see what Tom Knoll's Auto algorithm would apply to a specific parameter. No more - it's either all auto or no auto. I suspect this will be changed and reverted back to the more intelligent previous interface.

What problems are you experiencing?

Thanks for the warning.  I hadn't yet downloaded the update, and now I won't for as long as possible.  I'm with Bob on wanting to be able to use "partial auto".  And I've finally gotten all the initial ACR settings to what I like for my current camera; I don't want to have to fiddle with a new version.

I never use Auto anything - anathema. I downloaded 3.7 (Windows XP) -it was seemless and works fine (but can't vouch for auto anything). All that said, it has been vastly superceded by ACR 4 Beta bundled with PSCS3 Beta. Once you use that, you'll never go back to previous versions of ACR. This has most of the Develop module of Lightroom, along with a Point Curve, (which is very regrettably lacking in Lightroom, meaning in Lightroom we can't make shifts of end-points - one of the most useful adjustments of all). The amount of refined control you have over almost anything you could reasonably expect at the raw conversion level is incredible.

I don't use the auto DL feature either. But a neat way to address this issue would be that when auto download starts a backup copy of the old ACR would be saved somewhere.

I'm not sure this is now possible - is there any way to unbundle the ACR module from the rest of the program?

I won't, but you could trash this latest update. As for problems, it seems like the new auto setting was done by some fat fingered Frankenstein. Before things in auto were a little harsh, but easily corrected and I loved the check boxes. Now the fat fingered auto setting has gone berserk. Shadow settings have gone from 2 or 3 to 9's and higher. Midtones have gone off the charts. It's unexplainable. The upgrade has done more harm than good. I'm so amazed by it I can't even say things that aren't on my kids spelling list. If this is the best they(adobe) could do for an upgrade point me in the direction of a new company. I was real comfortable with Raw. I didn't switch to Apple
's new stuff or even Lightroom because I could use Bridge, Photoshop, and Raw real well. Now it looks like I'll have to learn all over again. Thanks Boku and if there's new idiot proof software on the market I can use let me know. If I'm going back to digital school I want something dumbed down.

Okay, I've calmed down. Blew a little steam. I looked at my files through Bridge and Raw again and maybe they don't look as bad as I thought. It just looks and feels wrong. People thing perception isn't reality, but it's close. The Raw screen looks smaller than it used to, I really miss those buttons, and I swear the color looks off. Why are they trying to make it like Lightroom?

I think I understand what MarkDS said, but "it has been vastly superceded by ACR 4 Beta bundled with PSCS3 Beta" what does this mean? Is there another update out there that is better than 3.7?

YES - it means exactly what I said - ACR4 Beta which comes bundled with PSCS3 Beta blows ACR 3.7 out of the water in terms of the amount of control it offers over image correction and enhancement. And they are very deliberately importing Lightroom features into ACR because those features are so good to have in a raw converter. Makes sense to me. It's the same company, after all!!!

Adobe forum thread on whether individual check boxes will be re-implemented. I suspect NOT.
