Hi
I looked at the ZD back @ mamiya.com & compared it to the new jpep image and there is a slight change on the RH side, the scroll function buttons are a little different.

I have looked again, and it does not state on the website wether this is incl. or excl. of sales tax/mva. but i expect it to be without...

For grins I emailed MAC Group here in the US, here are the responses:

Email #1-

Dear John,

The current version of the Mamiya ZD is sold only in the overseas markets and is not imported to the US by Mamiya America.  There will be a second version of their camera for American photographers available in the near future.  An exact release date is not available at the present time.  A current ZD purchased overseas cannot be serviced by Mamiya America; warranty and service will be provided by the distributor in the country where the camera was purchased.  We don't have a price set yet.

Thanks,
Garry Montalbano

Then I sent a second email restating that I was interested in the back, not the ZD dSLR (email #2) -

Dear John,

The same applies for the ZD back. I’m sorry we don’t have an approximate date or price yet.

Intriguing to ponder on the use of language here:  "second version" not "Improved" version.  It *might* be improved, but if not, in what way changed, one wonders?   And will a "second version" be sold in parallel with the european version, or replace it?  the back has only just been released in the EU, so presumably this adds to the feeling its a tad early for a US version to be improved.

I think we should be told

Quentin

PS give the US ZD a decent firewire port would be my advice

Quentin,

Did you have, by any chance, a warning sheet with your ZD as to how to operate it with Firewire. In particular, the once about the recommended sequence for connecting the cable, turning camera on/off, running remote capture software? It seems to me that I had it, but cannot locate it anymore... I would greatly appreciate it if you could share.

Thanks!

Garry (the representative at MAC) used the same wording about 30-45 days ago.  He probably has a Word document or notes application with all these responses pre-typed...  If they sold the unit in the US, more sales would lead to more profit which could lead to a 2nd revision with a better buffer, more secure firewire port, etc...

I'm not sure what role MAC Group plays in distributing Leaf products in the US (Leaf is shown as one of the products MAC Group distributes), so it seems to me they have a conflict of interest with the Aptus 22 and the Mamiya ZD / ZD Back.  I wonder if this has any part in why the ZD product(s) haven't appeared in the U.S.

hi michael,

I know, you didnt ask me, but I still answer: I never saw such info. But it would be very interesting to know if there is a certain procedure to follow. Just yesterday in the middle of a production it happend again: after an our of tethered shooting the files to be transfered go stuck in the middle of the cable somewhere, the camera tried to send them to the mac, where  they didn´t arrive. which means the buffer doesn´t clear. You cant even switch of the camera because it is warning you, that there are still unsaved files somewhere around. You have to take the battery out to solve the hick up.
This firewire-thing opens a whole new hobby to me - collecting firewirecables. Every time when I am shopping with wife/kids I take a stroll through the electronic department inspecting and sometimes bying firewire cables - on my quest to find the ultimate-ZD-cable. (some do actualy fit better than others).

Michael,

No idea - no warning I was aware of - maybe its in the manual.  I recall my Kodak 14n came with warnings, but that is still working after 4 years including a lot of tethered use, as is my still older DCS 760, but then that used the big firewire port and is one heck of a well made robust camera.

Amazing a pro product like the ZD - otherwise such a good camera - could be compromised by what was probably a few bucks cost saving measure.

It's the same with a lot of products. Engineers are trained not to save on connectors, but the managers are trained to shave costs, and connectors are one of the easiest place to shave cost because it's obvious that "a plug is just a plug".

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I have also requested that information from the dealer that I purchased my ZD from . If I get any valuable info I will post it on this forum.

Mamiya is also launching the two new lenses

http://translate.google.com/translate?u=ht...Flanguage_tools

I was checking prices for the 28mm but I must have done something wrong with the conversion. Can 672,000Y be 5706$?? That would make it even more expensive than Hasselblad one; It doesn't look reasonable. I'll have to check prices in Europe.

Thanks for confirmation. Too much for me to justify buying it, I'll continue with my old 35mm .
