Long glass with Mamiya 645 AFD II?
« on: March 19, 2007, 08:43:41 pm »

Anyone have experience with 300mm or 500mm lenses on a Mamiya 645 AFD II and a high-res digital back like the P-45? If so, how is the image quality? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks...

I have both the 300mm and 500mm, they are both manual on the AFD and AFDII, the 300mm is very sharp with the P45, the 500mm is also sharp but you have to watch out for vibrations. So, mirror lock up is a must with these lens and a vary heavy tripod. I have both the AFD and AFDII with the P45.

Are these the expensive fast lenses, or the cheaper lenses. Robert White are selling the slower manual lenses at very low prices right now.

200/2.8            450
210/4 N       145
300/5.6            250
300/2.8      2200
500/5.6          450
500/4.5      3250

I can't quite believe the prices of the 210/4 and the 300/5.6

There is actually a 300 f4.5 APO lens as well that is right in the middle on price. I would be interested in which lenses you have experience with as I suspect there is quite a bit of difference...

Both the 300 and 500 are their Apo lens. You can get them cheap at ebay. I got the 300/2.8 APO for $1700 and the 500/4.5 APO for $2900. The 200/2.8 APO is also a very sharp lens. $450 is a better price then I got from ebay. Yes, Mamiya older lens are cheap but they are sharp.

Tim, did you ever find out anything more about the Mamiya 300/4.5? Or better yet, did you ever get and test it for yourself? I'd be interested in your impressions.

Hans:

Not yet. I guess I still have a question about the 300 2.8 that I need to ask someone - does it require stop-down metering? I know it is not autofocus like the 4.5 and that is fine. I would probably get the 2.8 if it would meter normally so I could use the 2x on it and end up with 5.6 - I'd still have to stop down a couple of stops to 11 for better image quality, but doing that on the 4.5 (with the 2x) would probably a little far. There isn't much info available on these longer lenses.

I also would love to find out any info from folks on a Zeiss or other 300-400mm lenses that could be adapted to the Mamiya - they might be good enough to use wide open so the stop-down metering would not be an issue...

O.K.,I'll ask you Lester, "Does the 300 2.8 require one to use stop-down metering when
using this lens on an AFD-ll?"

Also, are you satisfied with the results of using the 300 2.8 with the P45?

Lester:

Very nice to have both lenses! Have you used either one with the 2x converter, and if so, any comments? It would be great to know about that 2.8 - if it required stop-down metering or not. Thanks for any info you can give us!

Yep! it does require stop-down for metering when using it with the AFD or AFD II, it is a manual lenses with those cameras.

It is a very sharp lens, I like using it. The 4.5 is also sharp but slower, but works full auto with the AFD or AFD II.

Sorry, I never used them with the 2x converters.

Those prices are in pounds sterling...so they're good but not _that_ good. You'd need to double them for US$ and multiply by 1.5x for €. Then it becomes apparent that there are better deals out there.
