New Hahnemuehle Photo Rag Pearl.
« on: March 13, 2007, 05:40:27 am »

I was wondering if anyone has tried this new paper which is supposed to offer the Photo Rag base with Fine Art Pearl like coating.

I guess it's a PK paper.  How does it compare to PhotoRag and Fine Art pearl? Color, Surface, 'Glossiness', Contrast?

Nikos, I have been working with this new paper for about two weeks now and I like it enough to order a 24 inch roll and a box of 17X22 sheets yesterday!.  The color is a natural white but is slightly brighter than Crane Museo Rag.  The surface is smooth--similiar to the smoothest sheet of Photo Rag matte paper that you've ever seen--maybe smoother but wih a very low gloss coating on it.  The paper is heavy--it's advertised as 320 gsm. but my box says 344 gsm so not sure which is correct--probably the 320 number.  The surface is far far superior to the Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl----I hated that paper--my prints looked dead on it--no depth (fine art pearl).  This paper works well for both color and black and white with the K3 inks.  There is some gloss differential in very light areas of the print so I usually put a touch of spray on these areas to even up the gloss.  Definitely worth a try.  It's a quality paper and much better than it's cousin, the Fine Art Pearl.  Eleanor

Ok I tested this paper with the z3100 over the weekend and I ordered one 24in and one  44 in role, so you see I like it.

In my eyes it is a great paper and I think it will replace my PhotoRag as my standard paper. Gamut is a little bit smaller than Fine Art Pearl, but still quite big.

I tried this paper along with Innova Ultra Smooth glossy.  I have been using Innova Semi Matte.  I use a 3800 and print black and white only.
The PhotoRag Pearl is very nice with a warm  (non brightened) base.  D max is very good (about 2.4 I think).  The surface still has that sort of pearl look to it.  It isn't as much as the Fine Art Pearl.  Otherwise the surface is nice.  I find the pearl look objectionable when under direct bright light (like halogens).  I find the paper gets kind of sparkly.
The Innova USG is very bright white.  The surface comes the closest to matching old fiber base glossy air dried.  I have old step wedges from a variety of papers, so this is a direct visual comparison.  The surface texture and gloss are both right on the money.  D max is also in the 2.4 neighborhood.  I wish it was heavier weight.  (285)
I also really like the Innova Semi Matte.  It is just slightly less bright to my eye and has a slight surfce texture, but it is not at all pearl like.

So my personal favorite is the Innova USG with the Semi Matte a close 2nd.

Yes the problem is that all Innova Papers ( F-Type ) are totally unusable for me. I tried them all and Gamut is bad, lot's of them have strange stripes after the print.  BUT they are nice, just not usable with the z series from HP. I used Innova with my Epson 2400 a lot and liked it. So as always you have to get the best paper for your printer and so far for me it is, HP Prof. Satin, HM PhotoRag Pearl, HM Fine Art Pearl.

Thanks everybody for your input. I think I'll order some to sample. Only thing is I have too much FAP still lying around and, judging from your words, I risk not liking FAP anymore after I've sampled this.

Does anybody who have tested both this and FAP, believe that FAP would still be superior for some application?

Notes on the Innova FibaPrint papers. I recently obtained samples of these three: FibaPrint White Gloss (the one Michael has a review of), FibaPrint White Semi-Matte, and FibaPrint Ultra Smooth Gloss (the newest one). Peter commented on the last two in an earlier post.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm having difficulty seeing any differences in surface texture between these three. I've held prints from all three at various angles to the light (both tungsten and daylight) and they all seem to me to be about equally reflective and have a very similar sheen. Maybe someone can point out to me what differences I ought to be looking for?

This is not at all what I had expected, given what I've read from various places. I am familiar with White Gloss's "stipple" pattern. I had thought the Semi-Matte would be smoother and somewhat less glossy. Doesn't seem to be.

I was also somewhat surprised to find that the Semi-Matte is considerably warmer than either of the other two. Not only less bright, but much warmer/yellower. Not bad, but just not what I was expecting.

Ultra Smooth Gloss is the whitest of the three, a tad brighter than White Gloss, but these two are much similar in shade and brightness than Semi-Matte. Semi-Matte looks pretty yellow when you hold them all side by side.

I am also experiencing the pizza-wheel-track issue with all 3 papers on my Epson 3800. If anybody has suggestions on how to minimize / avoid this issue, I'm all ears!

I tried the HPR Pearl sampler, and really liked it. I'm currently using plain HPR, and the HPR Pearl appears to have a better DMax. The only thing preventing my adoption is the inherent sheen, not huge but there. The main reason why I like matte papers is I don't like shiny surfaces. Currently I'm leaning toward staying with HPR, but who knows.

Definitely check it out.

If increasing the platten gap fails, why don't you try increasing drying time between passes? I think there's an option in the driver to do that.

Ok, I wrote him an email about my problems, one other thing which really gets me confused:

What Types of Innova Papers are there now ?

- F Type Gloss Max Black 300
- FibaPrint Satin High White 300
- Fiba Print Ultra Smooth Gloss 285
- Semi-Matte 300
- Warmtone 300

These are the papers listed on the Innova page:

FibaPrint White Gloss 300 gsm (F-type gloss) >
FibaPrint White Matte 285gsm >
FibaPrint Warm Tone Gloss 300 gsm >
FibaPrint White Semi-Matte 300 gsm >
FibaPrint Ultra Smooth Gloss 285gsm NEW! >

So now is the Satin missing ? What is the Matte one ? Am I right that all of them are F-Type papers ?

Thanks for clearing things up.

To the best of my knowledge, all of the papers above should be used with Photo Black ink, except for the 2nd paper (FibaPrint White Matte) which should use Matte Black.

And I think Innova is wrong: the White Matte is 280 gsm not 285 gsm. (unless they recently changed the paper ... sigh)

It's my understanding that the Satin and the FibaPrint White Semi-Matte are the same paper. The latter name is the official product name at least in the US.
