Digital file management remote (no laptop)
« on: March 06, 2007, 12:55:30 pm »

I'm heading over to spain for two weeks in early May and expect to generate a few images.  I will have my Canon 5D and 4-6 4GB CF cards.  I am not taking a laptop.  I require two copies of all files after coming off the CF cards.

I'm looking for some ideas to store images after the shoot in a secure place with redundancy.  Since I won't have a laptop, portable hard drives don't seem to be an option.  I've thought about buying two Epson P-5000s, but at that cost I might as well buy a laptop for the trip.

Any ideas?  I expect to require 60-80GB max and don't really require viewing capability (it would be nice, but not required).

Thanks,

Eric

I have an HD80 also, and it has been terrific, including six weeks in Italy and three weeks in southern California (including Death Valley.) My other backup was a Nixvue Digital Album Lite, which conked out during my recent California trip. I will probably get another HD80 or the newer Hyperdrive Space as a second backup. Very easy to use, rugged, reliable.

Even though you could get a laptop for the price of two Epsons, that would still leave you with only one copy of the files. Addtional external HD also add to the cost.

While the HD80 is a great device, I would prefer something that has a display to check the image quality right away. So why not get one device with a display and a cheaper one without?

Besides the Epson, I would strongly recommend you have a look at the Jobo GIGA Vu Pro evolution and compare them side by side.

The combination of an HD Space 100GB plus an Epson or Jobo 80GB would be less than 980 USD.

Cheers,

Andrew

As far as I know the JOBO supports USB2GO/OTG so you could copy your cards through the JOBO's reader slot and then back them up on regular external USB HD's. Not sure how much power the JOBO's USB will output though. Of course the JOBO costs the same as a low end laptop but it's much more portable.

After reading Michael's "What didn't work" - the issue that troubles me is corrupted CF card.  That, in fact, happened to me once, fortunately on the last day of the trip, but I couldn't get it loaded into the Hyperdrive.   Once at home everything was fine.  Subsequently I upgraded firmware and re-formatted - but there's no way (at least with the HD 80) to rescue a corrupted card.  The new Hyperdrive claims additional functionality in making sure all possible images are downloaded, but it's not going to compete with dedicated laptop based rescue software.  I'm still reluctant to bring a laptop on trips and am thinking about adding some redundancy to my collection of cards - they're cheap enough that if one or 2 get corrupted I'll still have a couple to get me through the day/trip and do the resuce at home.

Has anyone heard of the Wolverine reader? Heard it talked about on threads, but do not know anyone personally who has it.

I have a laptop, but don't want to take it.  I'm going to have 4-6 4GB cards, so that's plenty accounting for any failures.  I like the ideas, but for the price I may just stick with one HD device.  I'm surprised that more people don't have similar issues.

I fail to see why in the world you couldn't burn some DVDs and put them in a cd wallet since you hace a laptop...

just common sense.

p.s.: there's a lot of very good camera bags that can accomodate a laptop too.

Yes, this might be an option. I just didn't think of it because my workflow needs a speedier way to get two copies before deleting the CF cards. Burning DVDs takes a while, an extra HD is much faster.

Cheers

You could get an 80gb Ipod with the camera connector, i think thats cheaper than the epsons? but it does suck a lot of battery and takes long to transfer im told.
