Another monitor question
« on: March 04, 2007, 10:16:02 pm »

Greetings,

I am setting up a studio for personal photography at home. The downside is I have quickly realized why using a MacBook Pro as my primary monitor is a bad thing. I already have a Monaco XR for profiling, so all I need now is a good LCD monitor to suction cup attach it to (just checking to see if you are paying attention).

So I've searched the threads, here and elsewhere, and settled (tentatively) on Samsung, principly the 214t or 244t, with a current preference for the 244t mostly because it is only about $100US more and seems to be very comparable in quality to the 214t with a whole lot more real estate. Now this is for someone who is an advanced amateur in photography but just really getting started on the magic of Photoshop, so I don't need an Eizo. While I realize that it is worth the money all I would get out of it is a sore body from thumping my chest and exclaiming "I own an Eizo" to people who don't have the foggiest idea what I am talking about. (If I need a status symbol I'll just mention my Canon iPF5000. Kind of like I just did.   )

And as a graphic artist I love the idea of being able to see a two page spread at 100%, as I could with the 244t.

My needs are for an accurate, but not obsessively so, color rendition at a price below $800 in hands for a monitor larger than 20". I know I can get that for the 244t, and certainly can for the 214t. IPS isn't a requirement for me; yes I know it is generally regarded as better. To me it seems that the Samsung 244t is a bargain, given that it is going for less than half its introductory MSRP (is it nearing EOL?).

Thanks for looking in.

I don't have first-hand knowledge of either the 214T or the 244T, but I have been delighted with my 213T (predecessor of the 214T.) If I had to buy a monitor today, I'd probably go for the 244T. The price point of these Samsungs is very reasonable for what you get.

To further add to the confusion I just found a refurbished LaCie 321 (10 bit LUT) for $899 with a 180 day warranty.

Now I'm really confused.

I looked at that too, having had very good luck with refurbished lacoe CRT's in the past, but could not get a good answer about how much difference the 10 bit vs. the current 12 bit would make. So I bit the bullet and bought the new 12 bit.

The 213T I have is decent at its price point. The problem is not the color, it's that it's simply more tiring to look at than the Eizo. The LaCie should be better. In theory.

You might try to find an Eizo CG19 or similar.

Thanks for your response, but while the CG19 is probably a great monitor, it tips over into the too expensive side.

I'm starting a new thread, because my questions are going in a different direction.

Have you considered an HP pro line LCD. I have a few and they are really good.
