Canon LCD protection or ideas
« on: March 01, 2007, 07:10:20 pm »

I just purchased a Canon 5D (first digital camera) and have a couple of questions related to the LCD screen.

1.  How do most people protect the LCD screen from scratching?
2.  Do devices like the Delkin eFilm Pop-up shades work?
3.  Is it easy to replace scratched LCD screens?
4.  Do LCD screens scratch easily?

Thanks,

Eric

1. By excercising the same care they do with the rest of the camera - don't put it in harms way.
2. I guess - they are a royal PITA.
3. No idea - never seen this happen.
4. Not unless you try to scratch them.

It's a cheap part, about 10 bucks or so. Easy to replace. I still have a D60 from way back w/no scratches. I do this for a living. Reasonable care.

My friend has a Delkin thingy on her 350D - I hate the thing, gets in the way of the viewfinder, catches on bag straps etc - yuk!  Neither my E1 nor my 30D has suffered scratches and I'm one of those people that thinks lens caps are quaint.....

Most likely, anything that'll scratch the LCd will also damage the rest of the body.  Exercise reasonable care and it should be fine.

Exercise some care and you shouldn't need to worry too much.

Nikon supply a plastic cover with it's SLR's.  The irony is I've never seen other serious Nikon shooters use it!

In that case, the part is cheaper on your D60 than on a compact digicam; there you can expect to pay 50+ USD.

I use a da'Oly protector for my 20D. It doesn't scratch too easily itself, and I've got a spare in case it gets scratched too badly.

Check in the product selector (requires Java browser plugin) for support for your camera. IIRC, the 5D uses the same size LCD as the 30D.

I'm wondering if you could just use a PDA screen protector, cut it to size and stick on the screen. I use these for my Palm Pilot & Ipod and they work great.

For my iPod I use

http://www.shieldzone.com/

They claim it is the same stuff that the military uses on leading edges of helicopter blades. Works great... Also, once installed, you would not know it was there. Also is removeable.

You can try Expert Shield screen protector.
You can try the Expert Shield, their customer service was great, they custom made one for me & it's a perfect fit for my screen because I measure it myself. And the quality was excellent too, so far it is the best one that I can find.

PDA screen protectors work well. I purchased a package of Palm screen protectors in my local office supplies store. I cut the protector to match the size of my LCD and applied it. If it gets scratched I can easily replace it. In expensive and works well. I've applied them on other cameras for firends and family.

I've had six Canon DSLRs and together put almost half a million frames on them.  I take care of my equipment but I don't treat it like religious artifacts, and I've never had the slightest scratch on any of my LCDs.

I used to do this, and it worked OK. The particular product I used made the image look just a bit to "fuzzed out" for me and it was very difficult to get all of the air bubbles out when applying it. It didn't last all that long either.

On the bright side, it was very cheap.

the trick: remove all dust and hairs from the screen before applying as these create the air bubbles

Best Screen Protector
This is a specific question for those who have tried several screen protectors. What have you found to be the best? And why?

Hi,

I guess I'm hard on cameras. On one of mine, bought 3 years ago, the LCD screen has a lot of fine scratches and one deeper gouge. Still works fine, though.

Because of the damage I was doing to that older camera, I've been trying out an eFilm screen protector/hood on my newer Canon 30D.

There are two versions of this:

One is a universal model, made to fit onto most cameras that share the same size screen. The universal model comes in 1.5", 2", 2.5" and 3" sizes, I think. It can be found in silver and black. It has a thin clear LCD cover that mounts onto the LCD with adhesive, then a removable folding hood which snaps into place on the frame around the clear plastic. I'm using a 2.5", black version of this on my camera.

The other model is a little more expensive and is camera specific. It attaches at least partially using the eyecup frame, replacing the original eyecup, and has some have "button" extensions built into them. By design, it is thicker. I tried it on the camera and felt it protruded too much, so opted for the slimmer, universal model.

My reason for buying this thing was not so much LCD protection, as it was for the hood that helps shade the LCD and make it more useful in bright outdoor situations. The hood folds flat when not in use, and, as mentioned, is removable.

Well, I won't buy another for my other camera.

The reason is that the hood unclips by sliding to the left from the base mount, and falls off *a lot* when carrying the camera on it's strap. It's really irritating and I've nearly lost the hood a few times. It should have some sort of positive lock to keep it in place. Currently I've got a couple small pieces of black gaffer tape keeping it in place. These help, but shouldn't be necessary.

On my older D-SLR (Canon 10D), I'd once installed a Hoodman protector/hood combo. The non-folding  hood was always in the way and for all practical purposes had to be removed to use the camera. I lost it and eventually removed the clear protector/hood mount.

Since then, on that and other cameras that have them, I've protected various LCD screens with the thin, slightly self-adhesive plastic that comes in sheets, is widely available, and easy easy to cut to size and shape. These can be a little tricky to get installed without a few air bubbles under them, get damaged eventually, but work fine and it's no big deal to just replace them every once in a while. I bought a packet of ten sheets marketed by Kodak that has ben enough to cover and re-cover LCDs on three film cameras and two D-SLRs for  3 or 4 years now. There are a lot of different manufacturers offering these sheets, which are just like what is shown in the link jennyyu provided. Heck, the Wolfe Camera store three blocks from my house even offers them. If you want to protect an LCD screen, this is what I'd recommend, at least until eFilm comes up with an improved product.

BTW, Hoodman offers an LCD viewing loupe that might be a better way to both shade *and* magnify the LCD during playback and menu changes, or even with Live View, if you camera has it. I haven't tried this yet, but just might when I finally lose the eFilm clip-on hood.

Cheers!

Alan

Pricing aside (about $25.00 through B & H) this seems like an interesting idea...

scroll down the main page to Pro Screen Protectors
with Nanotech static & AR Coating, as a direct hyperlink cannot be

Any feedback?

Edit: To be a bit more specific I am referring to the coated glass model which attaches with double sided tape and is apparently 0.5mm thick.  They are sized for, and available by speciic camera bodies.  Not so much interested or impressed by the coatings (kind of a gee wiz thing, but ok, they added it) as I am intrigued by the thin, unobtrusive nature of it.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I use the da'Oly protector, which isn't quite as fancy in their marketing blurbs, but also costs only a quarter as much - 6 dollars. The da'XT protector is the correct choice for the 30D/350D (Rebel XT), the da'400D protector for the 400D (Rebel XTi), and I'd be surprised if they don't soon have a protector for the new 3" screens, too.

It doesn't detract much (if anything) from the screen of my 20D, but of course I can't say whether the same is true for newer models.
