Lightform Web Galleries in my new site
« on: March 01, 2007, 02:18:50 pm »

I have converted the "Portfolio" section of my web-site using Lightroom generated flash galleries.  These galleries are customized by editing the XML style sheet for each, and are further embedded in an HTML web page.  I only know how to embed at a fixed size, so I am concerned how these will look on monitor resolutions other than mine (1280x1024).  I'd also be interested to know how these look on a Mac rather than a PC (are Mac monitors still gamma 1.8?)

Please have a look and let me know what you think.

BTW... I also converted the kludgy static HTML menu system in the previous version to a javascript based version.  You now need only 2 clicks to see pictures... rather than 5 or so in the old design.

I can't figure out how to centre the menu bar across the page... if any one knows how to do this, I'd appreciate the help.  Be warned though, I am definately NOT a programmer (which will be evident I am sure if you have a look at the site).

My site is located here

As a Mac user, I am very sorry to report that it doesn´t seem to work properly with any of my four browsers.  With Safari, the sunflower is indeed clickable, and the page it leads to looks great; the "mouse-over" on the top bar does display further links, but these do not respond. Omni Web is the same.  With Firefox, still clickable sunflower leading to the second page, but no mouse-over, and nothing else responds.  In Opera, I can´t even see the sunflower...

I do have Java support enabled, and normally most web sites work for me with Safari (and the few that don´t usually do with Firefox).  I hardly ever use Opera or Omni Web.

What little I can see of your site does look appetizing; I do hope you get it sorted out soon!

(Btw, gamma 1.8 is a thing of the past.  Most modern Mac monitors use 2.2, afaik.).

Mark,

It looks and works great on 1024x768 in IE6 on a PC.

This is an example of why it is a bad idea to design a site for Internet Explorer 6. It's a broken web browser. Besides, MS is in the process of phasing it out with IE7 (which works far better) which means any site made with IE 6 will most likely require allot of re-working in the future.

It's least time-consuming to design for a WC3 compliant browser (which is any browser except IE6 anymore) and then debug for IE6 as a final step.

...and wile I;m on the subject...

Kirk, please don't resize my web-browser. I like it how it is, thanks.

Well... Thanks to all for taking the time to look at my site.  Not exactly the response I was hoping for.

Awstats says that 84% of the visits to my site are IE 6 or 7, which means that 16% of all visitors have a "less than optimal experience".   Clearly not acceptable.

The pages were developed using IE7 as a debugging platform, and it all works there.

So I have cobbled together a different approach and uploaded a test here.  At the risk of angering the forum cops, (most of this is not related to LR 1.0) perhaps I could impose on a few to try this out.  These menus seem to work in Firefox, although the embedded LR gallery displays, but doesn't seem to load any images.  I'd be even more concerned if this was happening in Safari or ??? on a MAC.

Thanks to all again.

Mark,

Your test page works fine in Safari and in FireFox on the Mac.

Daniel,

Really!!  It works on a Mac/Safari now??  All I changed was the javascript menu approach... the flash embedding approach was unchanged.

As I am clearly not a web developer... I'd much rather be behind a camera, I will likely just pay some one to fix it to work with PC/Firefox, Mac/Opera etc.

Mark:  Works fine in IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.2 running on Vista

My only complaint - no keyboard interface for flash

Lovely images . . . thank you

Your test hangs on PC/Firefox, and your manin site's menus don't work either.

OK... I've re-done all the pages with a different javascript menu, which according to Daniel should work with Mac OSX/Safari.  THis setup works with IE 6/7 as well. which according to Awstats, together with Safari account for 94% of all visitors to my site.

PC/Firefox will have to wait until I can hire someone who actually knows what they are doing (in contrast to myself)

Would someone confirm that PC/Firefox is OK with the JS menus, but appears to hang with the Lightroom flash gallery load?  I think this is a result of the "generic" embedding method I have used... but again, I am significantly over my head with this stuff.

Thanks again to all.

Well, now it works just fine on my Mac´s, both with Safari and Firefox.

The contents are well worth the initial troubles, I´m happy to say.  Good luck!

Only, NEVER trust Microsoft products for site design work!  They don´t follow standards, and they use solutions that they know won´t work with other browsers/platforms.....

The JS left menu works, but the Flash movie hangs.

John,

Sorry, but the PC/Firefox issues will have to wait a bit.  As I said earlier, I'm over my depth here, and I have no desire to become a web professional... I'd rather be behind a camera.  Fortunately I'm a bit more competant there than here.

Apparently in web development, as in life,  you get what you pay for.

Thanks for taking the time.
