do a gursky
« on: March 01, 2007, 03:55:37 am »

yesterday i went to see the bi Gursky show in Munich, whatever you think of his work, his prints are fabulous! so i thought: get the ixus out, photograph something with lotsa people in it, print is HUGE, act very german and watch the millions comming in!

one thing which really struck me was that some of the larger prints where stiched out off two banners. i presume there is just no printer in 3m wide which would fulfill the quality needed.

I realized I can reach any size i want! that is great!

so back in the studio i took a larg file, blew it up to 150x120cm @ 120dpi , split it horizontally into three pieces and printed 40x150 cm banners on my epson 4000. i stiched them, though i have problems to hide the seams. first, the paper curls slightly at the bordersd, secondly it is quite difficult to get a 100% straight cut in 150cm when you only have a ruler of 60cm and only a slightly battered table to cut it. in gursky's prints you had to go really close to see the joints, i guess it is not so easy after all. i will try to stickmount it onto something flat, probably that helps.

i guess getting it commercially printed is the brighter solution, as it tokk me hours and the result is mediocre. though seen from more that 2 m in bright light it looks great!

I saw it to on sunday. The size of the prints is really impressive. A thing that struck my eye fast was the quality difference in some prints. I ecpect that it comes from different cameras. 4x5 against 8x10 ? I really loved some of the very detailed ones. It really is intrested, how he hides the "stichtes" perfectly.
