New science/photography BLOG
« on: February 17, 2007, 10:39:18 am »

Last week I launched the science/photo-BLOG:  http://photophys.com
This BLOG is devoted of all aspects of science and technology related to photography.  In addition to discussing lenses, sensors, color theory, etc., I am previewing chapters of my new book, "Science for the Curious Photographer."  At this point I have posted drafts of the first six chapters.

1.  What is photography?
2.  What is light?
3.  The camera
4.  Images: What is perspective?
5.  Why does a camera need a lens?
6.  Elementary optics.  How do lenses work?

The tentative table of contents is listed in my first post to the BLOG.  I hope to get comments and criticism that will help me improve this first draft.  Also, suggestions for types of photographs and illustrations that will enhance the presentation are appreciated.

I really want candid opinions.  Problems with the level of the presentation will be more evident in later chapters where more math appears.  Of course, comments are easy since it is a BLOG.

Chapter 7: "What is behind the rules of optics" has now been added. This one may be of interest to those who like optics and modern physics. As always your comments will be appreciated.

Recently, I have been reviewing the literature on the human eye and trying to compare the eye to a digital camera.  I have also considered the limitations on human vision and the way those limitations should affect decisions about photographic equipment.  Some of what I have earned appears in a draft of Chapter 15: "The Limits of Human Vision - How Good Does a Photographic Image Need to Be?" This is available for viewing as a pdf file at my website: photophys.com.  Biology is not my forte, and I hope to get comments and suggestions from knowledgeable readers. Thanks.
