Lightroom web gallery
« on: February 17, 2007, 03:11:52 am »

I have my site built in dreamweaver, with an index page for the gallery, and a table to insert it into.
I cannot figure out how to get it there. I'm sure there must be something simple that I am missing. Any help?
Thanks, Ted

Is your question about Dreamweaver or Lightroom? Or both. Say more about exactly what you are trying to do.

The light room gallery is pretty straight forward, and I have a it set up the way I want. When I export the gallery, it has a content folder, resources folder, and an index.html file. I'm not sure what to do with them. I want to end up with a page that has my logo, home, about, contact, gallery buttons etc.,(which is in place) with the lightroom gallery below, set into the space/table I set aside for it. I don't know how to get it in there. I tried uploading the gallery directly to my site, and that did not work, but even so, I'm not sure where it would end up. I need to import it into the dreamweaver table, I think. I'm not sure how the Lightroom gallery is designed to be used on the web. I guess I could try a dreamweaver forum, but I don't know if anyone would know much about lightroom. Sorry, I'm a new at this.

Thanks, Ted

I know both programs well. What you're trying to do isn't for beginners - apart from anything else, LR's gallery uses newer technologies than are in DW. At present the gallery is designed for standalone use, and you'd be better off placing it in a subfolder of your web site, and simply doing a link from your main page to that folder.

Thanks John,

Here is a link to Sean McCormacks website. This is similar to what I want to do. Although I am new at this, I getting help from a friend who has designed several sites with dreamweaver, and she cannot figure it out. If you have some advanced technical advice, I'd love to receive it and pass it on to my friend.

I know Sean's site and he and I have experimented along the same lines - he's done a brave job, while I decided against putting further time into an overcomplicated task while the software was beta. I've told Adobe that I feel the web solution is misguided and I'm sure they are listening.

My advice remains to use the built in presets, generate a gallery, and put it in a link from your main site. But if you want to plough on, point your friend to Sean's Lightroom blog where there are 2 or 3 posts - look out for where to get the JardinePro template. However, you will be dealing with a lot of XML and XSLT and there's a lot of trial and error in the work.

John,

I haven't had a chance too investigate XSLT since I wanted to wait for the final release before tackling it. When I read John Nack's post on it it seemed like a unnecessarily complex way to output simple XHTML.

What are your and Sean's impressions of it? Is it as strait forward as XML or is it fairly abstract?

Fairly abstract.
I should apologise for my galleries in their current state. They've gone through numerous revisions and in some cases I missed a little bug in the linking on some of them, which I later corrected. I've been so busy recently, that the time to simply run the appropriate collections through the template, has not been available.
Today was spent hosting and participating in a Distinctions workshop for the IPF for my Associateship panel, so even free days aren't really free!

I will have some generic templates done, once I can figure out 2 things, If I can get the appropriate help, I'll gladly pass on the information.

Daniel

XML/XSLT is another league of difficulty up from pure XML, which is a step or two up from the HTML/CSS that a lot of LR users will have tried hacking. Also the available XML/XSLT editors like Oxygen and Altova are techy-oriented development tools, not simple report writers. Sean, though reasonably savvy, hadn't touched XML/XSLT before and did his template using a text editor, hacking a copy line by line and with lots trial and error.

So while many people can hack iView style HTML/CSS templates, and a few can hack XML into Simpleviewer etc, very few will scramble up the learning curve to customize LR templates (LR's web presets are just variations of colour and layout of two templates). Typical LR users are going to depend on professionals writing new templates for them, or wait until new more user-friendly editors evolve.

There is a lot to be said for XSLT, and I have worked with it professionally - taking XML output from financial systems. I use it a little with iView too. So I am not against the technology. But as I say, in LR I think it's a misguided solution and I have been talking along these lines to Adobe. IMO what the target market needed was something more like iView, Portfolio, CS2, Breezebrowser - essentially a flexible token-based web gallery feature.

John

ps As an aside, I found it more productive to output a Flash gallery from LR (it's the Adobe Media Gallery) and strip out the images and data. With this empty shell (just folders with the swf movie and resource files), I then scripted iView to generate the images and populate the XML data.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds overly complicated to achieve this. I guess we will have to wait and see what is new in Version 1.0 to address this. If I set up a link to a stand alone Lightroom gallery, is there a way to get back to the home page? or is the user stuck there. Seems to me that you would be stuck there, which is not what anyone would want.

John & Sean,

Thanks for the view points. I was afraid that would be the case and it appeared that way as well when I looked over the brief tutorial. It's a shame my suspicions had to be confirmed.

While I don't doubt the XLST approach can offer considerable flexibility I see it as case of over-engineering a simple problem. Kinda like requiring a degree in astrophysics just to operate a lathe. Something simple is all that's needed. I think letting us provide our own XHTML based templates with a series of tags to tell LR where to fill data would be the ideal solution. Like this:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">
<head profile="http://gmpg.org/xfn/11">
    <title>LR Gallery</title>
</head>
<body>
    <div id="galleryContainer">
        $gallery$
    </div>
</body>
</html>

Better yet, let us provide a template that LR will use to generate the content (like above) but keep it separate from what's used in the preview. This way server-side scripting can be included in the output. A separate and static template page could then be used for the preview.

Heck, they could still keep XLST as an option for advanced users too.

Whatever path they choose, hopefully Adobe will implement a simpler solution soon. In the mean time, I'll just have to bust out my text editor and wade through it...

Except you miss a very vital point: there are 2 page types to most galleries, the index page(s) and the media pages. Even iView has two page types to hack. I've not done any iView scripting though.

I have a modification of the simple one Andy shows with an image scroller and a menubar. Basically it's a single page gallery that has a center section with the images available to scroll through.

2 things I'll work on when I have time: Adding the ID plate and making a way to set your own menubar names and links. I have a rough idea on the second, but never tried and as for the first, I just can't find exactly the right combination of the Model/VBox/Bindings to make the ID plate work. If you want to look at it I'll post it in my Blog. Let me know.

My code example is just to get the point across and not to be thorough.

I'd love to check out what you got when you have time to post it. I'll be getting LR Monday and I have some time (and the need) to dedicate to this.

Using Andy Rahn's simple code you can extrapolate a page to look like a web page easily.:
This is the transformer.xslt file
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<xsl:stylesheet
    version="1.0"
    xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
>

    <xsl:output method="xml" indent="yes"/>

    <xsl:param name="siteTitle" select="/photoCollection/display/metadata/siteInfo/@title" />

    <xsl:template match="photoCollection">
  <files>
      <!-- copy source xml to a file for ease of development -->
      <file name="source.xml">
    <xsl:copy-of select="/" />
      </file>
      <!-- A ultra simple index page -->
      <xsl:call-template name="index.html" />
  </files>
    </xsl:template>

    <!-- Generate an index page -->
    <xsl:template name="index.html" >
  <file name="index.html">
<html>
    <head>
  <title><xsl:value-of select="$siteTitle" /></title>
    </head>
    <body>
  <ol>
      <xsl:for-each select="samples/img">
    <xsl:call-template name="indexImage" />
      </xsl:for-each>
  </ol>
    </body>
</html>
  </file>
    </xsl:template>

    <!-- Add one image to the list -->
    <xsl:template name="indexImage">
  <xsl:param name="path" select="rendition[@size='thumb']/@path" />
  <li><img src="{$path}" /></li>
    </xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

In the head you can call a CSS file that you link to in a file called gallery.xml

<gallery>
    <amgVersion>0.5</amgVersion>

    <filePath>mycss.css</filePath>
</gallery>
The filepath will link to this. Include any images etc, using the filepath tag.

To put the images in line remove the li and ol tags in the above.

You can build your own web template around this to start.
I'll upload my scroll template when I get home.

I just downloaded and fired up V1, and the html web gallery seems to provide links to my homepage and email. This is great news. I should be able add a link to the lightroom gallery from my website and be able to link back. This will at least get me going. I don't know if the html code is editable in dreamweaver, but will explore this.

In library mode, many of my shoots have changed names from what they were to the canon camera file names. I'll have to go in a rename many of my shoot or folders. Other than that, the program looks very good.

Cheers, Ted

Not sure what you mean here. Shoots were abolished, and thankfully you now see real folders. Your old shoots are in keywords. Say a bit more about the problem if you want - I've been working with beta5/v1 for quite a while.
