P30 & 35mm Lens - Yes, No???
« on: February 12, 2007, 11:49:53 am »

I've read some conflicting information regarding the P30 and wider lenses.  Some posts say wide lenses are fine, but no shift or movements.  Other posts have said to stick to tele's and above.  I'm not interested in using shift, etc. (Mamiya AFD II), but I would like to use the 35mm and 55mm lenses.  And due to the P30 crop factor, there's a 28mm lens that may find its way into the house   Is the P30 back a go or no go with these lenses on a AFD II?  Thank you.

John,

I don't think all P30 is the same, some will work and some might not. Yes the same model.
I have both the 35mm and 55mm lense on my Mamiya and P45, it works and it works great. I know another photographer that have a P45 back and it has more lens cast then normal. My don't, it has less lens cast then normal. (but then what is normal) I really think it is the CCD on these back and they are not all the same. You just have to try it on your system, to see if it works for you.

The P30 and P21 (I think) have the micro lenses, and that's the concern with wide angle or shift/movement lenses.  I'll talk to the rep this week and get his opinion.

There is NO problem with P30 and wideangel lensens,
only with shift/movement lenses.

P30 works perfectly with Hasselblad H1 and HC 35mm lens. So it will work on Mamiya AFD too. The sharpness is equal to what you would get with a tilt/shift enabled P45. HC 35mm has little barrel but nothing major so maybe the AFD 35 is even better...

there is no issue at all with WA lenses and the P30..i have the 35mm mamiya and there is no problem with the P30....
T/S is a problem with microlenses, but from my experience this depends on the back, on some it is worse then on others....
i used T/S on my P20 and never had to do any cc correction...and some people need to do cc even with WA lenses....

Thank you.

I spoke with Bill Crosky at Digital Transitions here in Dallas earlier this afternoon, he pretty much said the same.  Phase One wanted to be very conservative in the P30 (and P21) descriptions.  They knew extreme shifts could produce color issues, but they were not sure about all WA lenses, etc.  Bill said he hasn't seen any problems or had any customer complaints regarding the 35mm lens.  He was going to double check with their NY office.
