negative/slide scanner

I was wondering if anybody could recommend a negative slide/scanner, not top of the the line, but not garbage either.   Is there a decent scanner that will also do prints?  Seems like its either/or with scanners.

You will get best results with a dedicated film scanner.  I have a Nikon 9000 and it does an excellent job with medium format and 35mm.

I second the motion for a dedicated film scanner. My Nikon 8000 does a fabulous job, and may be available used. Its newer sibling the 9000 is also very capable.

Take a look on Ebay for a used Imacon Flextight -- many of their scanners will do prints, and you should be able to find one for a decent price. You'll get fantastic results with one of those.

You did not mention the size of the film you want to scan or what your budget is.

The Nikon 8000 and 9000 are superb scanners (I owned an 8000 until recently), but it would be nice to know if he wants to scan film larger than 120!

I'll second the Nikon 9000 recommendations. Not sure if it dis-qualifies itself as top of range - it's not if you compare it with Imacon , but agree with Kirk it depends if you want larger than MF. In which case a flatbed might be a good alternative (more versatile too). I heard good reports of the new Epson V700 - try googling it.

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of Canon 8400 or Canon 9600.    The Nikon 8/9000 might be a good slide/film scanner, but it doesnt do prints, plus its $1500.  Im not a pro, I just want to scan some old photos and slides/negs.

I've had Minolta F-2900, Minolta 5400, Epson 3200, Microtek Articscan 120TF (same as Polaroid SS120), Epson 4990 and now Epson V750. Best hardware was the Minolta 5400 but it is 35mm only. In the flatbed dept, Epson is a leader. The 4990 was quite good the V750 improves a bit on it. When I say quite good I mean that to produce a 12x18 from a 6x9 a dedicated scanner won't make a difference visible on the print. If it is for web display, take the cheapest. Another way to look at tit is by enlargement factors. The 4990 is very good up to 7-8x, the V750 up to 9-10x. Above, you need higher end scanners.

Hi,

I used an epson 4490 for scanning some 4000 slides and negatives. I am happy with the results. The epson software that came with it was a pain to use and the "digital ice" was not useful for slides. Vuescan did a better job.
If I had to do it again I would have bought the new v750 because you can do more slides in one run.  Scanning a slow work and with just 4 slides at a time it takes too long to wait and too short to do something else while the scanner is busy.

Regards,
Paula

I was looking for something made in this decade.  Didn't SCSI go out with the dinosaurs?
