IPF5000 Feeding problem
« on: February 02, 2007, 04:33:35 am »

I'm trying to decide what's harder, spending the next couple hours trying to print another A3+ shot for my book or a written expination to my insurance company why I smashed my new IPF5000.

I'm getting a warning message " Paper please reload" followed by "size undetected" about 9 out of 10 times I try to make a print, the manual ( clearly written by a junior lawyer at the Tokyo tax department ) is no help..

The paper is Hahnemuhle PhotoRag 308 fed through the top tray.

Any ideas ?
If not, anyone wanna buy a printer cheap ?

Thanks.

David,

The only time that I had some funky media messages I powered down the printer and unplugged it for several (maybe 30) seconds. After powering up again, the problem was gone.

I hope it's something as simple as this for you.

Also, David, have you checked the Wiki on this one?

Here's what some found when they suffered what it seems you're describing:

David,

There is still some weird stuff on feeding from the top tray for some printers.  Your problem sounds different than mine, but closely related.  I can't feed from the top tray with the roll feed holder installed.  Canon tech couldn't get it to work either, although he couldn't figure out WHY it wouldn't work.  Canon tech support ordered some parts, tech will be back in a week to install them.  They will definitely fix this sort of problem, so don't smash the IPF5000 just yet!

A couple of questions:

1) Have you loaded latest firmware (1.23) and software from Canon USA (assuming you are in U.S.)?  You have to call Canon to get a CD sent to you (next business day), as the updates aren't on Canon USA web site yet.

2) Have you called Canon tech support?  They are pretty good with these sorts of problems.  You may need a visit from the tech.

Good luck, and let us know the outcome so we can add it to the Wiki FAQ.

John,

According to David's member info. he's posting from Sidney, Australia, so firmware may not yet be available there, other than what some have used of the Canadian, European and Japan updates.

Thanks Dale and John,

No I didn't call support because (of course   ) it started the friday night of the weekend I've put aside to print a new portfolio, so that will have to wait till monday.

I'm sure when Monday rolls around Canon and Baltronics ( the dealer ) will do whatever it takes to get me running again, they always do.

I've had one softwear update in December for the driver but nothing yet for the printer so it's still I assume on version 1.00, hopefully that will fix the problem because when this thing stops warning and starts printing it's a very impressive bit of gear..

I'll let you know what happens next.

Hello,

Overcame problem last June by creating my own paper profiles using premium matt paper setting and printing a3 and a2 HPR 308 from the cassette. This may help but there could be new tricks developed for Canon iPF5000 since.

Just noticed that the size in the print plug-in for A3+ is 329 x 483 mm and the paper I'm feeding is 330 x 483 ..
What's the real size of A3+ ?

So setting the paper size in manual mode at 330mm tray length ( shouldn't that be width ? ) it's feeding about 30 % of the time..

At this rate i should have a new Portfolio in time for retirement..

I had the same problem: I started printing from the tray Friday night and discovered the problem too late. I am calling Canon tomorrow.

For those who don't have roll holder yet, check the posting I just made, I think I have found a method to determine if you have the problem.
