The right graphics card?
« on: January 27, 2007, 03:44:58 pm »

I've just purchased a Mac Pro and wondering if the NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT which comes standard is adequate for my needs(Just upgrading from a powerbook G4) or if the ATI Radeon X1900 XT would have been a better bet.  I'm using it only for digital photography.

Any thought?

The right graphics card?

I recently did the switch to Mac thing also.  I have the Mac Pro as well.  I opted to get the ATI card.  I had been thinking of doing some digital video at some point and it also gives you more options with multiple monitors.  For using Photoshop on one monitor the standard card should be fine.

For photo editing, you don't need the latest and greatest accelerated 3D card; pretty much anything made in the last 2-3 years will be more than adequate. If you're using an analog (15-pin D-sub VGA) connection between card and monitor, ATI cards tend to have better quality analog outputs than nVidia. But if you're using a digital connection (DVI or HDMI), that doesn't really matter. If you opt for a card that supports multiple monitors, make sure it has separate LUTs for each monitor, or you won't be able to profile easch monitor separately. I opted to install 2 separate cards to avoid that issue. both ATI. ATI also has one driver installer that will set up and upgrade all ATI cards with one installer, even if they aren't the same model.
