Epson: shortcut to nozzle check?
« on: January 17, 2007, 10:48:09 am »

I always run a nozzle check on my 4800 before starting a print job.  The way I get to it is Printers, right-click the printer, Printing Preferences, Nozzle Check.  Does anybody know a quicker way to access it?  Ideally I'd like to put a shortcut on my desktop that takes me straight to the Printing Preferences dialog or better yet straight to the Nozzle Check screen.

This is close to what you want.

Right click on your printer, and select create shortcut.  It will place a shortcut to your printer right on your desktop.
Then all you need to do is right-click on the shortcut, and select Printing Peferences...

There is also a way to create a shortcut that you can just double click to print a nozzle check only; no dialog box.  It does not sound like that is what you are looking for though.

Thanks John.  They both sound helpful; how do I do the latter?

It's easier to do it from the printer. The latest firmware will even prompt you at power-up to do it if it thinks it's warranted.

A01868 (though there may be later versions on international sites). You can download it from here:

Thanks.

EDIT:  I'm usually of the "if-it-ain't-broke" frame of mind when it comes to firmware updates.  Any compelling reasons to do this update if I'm otherwise happy?  Any gotchas?

I'm sure there are lots of ways; here is how I did it for myself.

1) Configure your printer properties to "keep printed documents".  Search if you don't know how to do that.
2) Perform a nozzle check in the normal way.
3) Look in your spool folder, normally C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS, you will find a small file that is they nozzle check commands.  Copy that file to afolder; I put it in C:\programs\print_nozz.
4) Change your printer properties back to not "keep printed documents", assuming you don't.

Now, you can send that file to the printer anytime you want and it will print a nozzle check.  You need a program to send raw files to a printer; there are many ways, search if you are not sure e.g., "rawprint"

5) Create a batch file (.bat) to send the file.  (I use my Quadtone RIP rawprint.exe to send it) My batch file contains the following single line.
rawprint "epson stylus pro 3800" printnozz.spl
6) Create a shortcut to the batch file.  The Target and Start-in should be automatically set correctly.  Put this shortcut on your desktop.

To print a nozzle check at any time, just double-click the shortcut, voilà!

Below is the cumulative change history:

• Changes the periodic print quality verification LCD message from the previous: “< N Power Cleaning Y >” to: “< N Auto Nozzle Check Y >”. With this firmware version the printer now asks if a Auto Nozzle Check should be performed, pressing the Right Arrow > button will perform the Auto Nozzle Check. If the Auto Nozzle Check Fails only then will a Power Cleaning be performed to recover the missing nozzles. If the Auto nozzle check Passes No Power Cleaning is performed and normal printer operation is restored. To Cancel the Auto Nozzle Check and return to normal printer operation press the < N Left Arrow button.
• Updated media support tables
• Improved ink management
• Improved functionality when using third party RIPS.
• Allows users to feed and print Premium Glossy Photo Paper from the paper tray. The forbidden media error is no longer displayed. The firmware has to be used in conjunction with the latest driver(5.52 for Windows and 2.33 for Mac).

I haven't had any problems with this. Note that this firmware and the latest driver is probably mandatory for the new Premium Luster 260 paper.

p.s.  Updating the driver won't require updating any of my ICC profiles, will it?

If the new driver changes ink management, you'll need all new profiles. A profile is only valid for a single printer, paper, and driver/firmware setting combination. But the new profiles will probably have less work to do to linearize the printer, so the result should be an improvement overall.

Thanks.  I suppose that may explain the new ICC profiles posted by Epson on 11/03/06 then...

Good point Jonathan.
It would be cheaper for me to buy a new 44" printer than have my profiles rebuilt to adjust for a firmware update that changed ink management.
Something to be very wary about.
