HP Photosmart Pro B9180 & Vista
« on: January 15, 2007, 04:13:42 am »

If you are already working with windows Vista, don't bother to purchase the HP Photosmart Pro B9180: it's not compatible yet.

This is a big disappointment from a company communicating that all its printers 3-year old or younger work with Vista, that Vista has been available since the end of November and most hardware companies have been offering at least beta drivers for months. No such luck with HP, it's not even possible to try a beta driver. As a comparison my old Canon S9000 worked from the start with no additional software need.

So I had to install it on an old computer with XP.
Having purchased HP Premium Plus Photo Satin paper I was also disappointed that an ICC profile was neither included with the XP driver nor downloadable from the HP site. So I profiled it myself with X-Rite ColorPulse.

On the other hand, I must say that the first prints with HP Advanced Glossy & HP Premium + satin look quite fantastic.

Cheers,
Cedric

As a sidenote, I read somewhere claiming that HP Premium papers and the B9180 is a no-no. Advanced good, Premium bad. I can neither confirm nor deny that statement, I plan not to push my luck (although I do have something called plainly HP Photo Matte, waiting with eager how that turns out)

Wow that's not a good news, I purchased quite a bit as it appeared superior to advanced paper when reading the packaging.

Do you have any link with the warning?

Thanks,
Cedric

I have one client who had no luck with either premium or advanced -prints too light- until I profiled the printer for her (I recommended Advanced because that's what I found on the HP web site). Now she's happy. She knows how to use profiles so I assume she tried HP's canned profiles first.

But I still wonder - how good are the canned B9180 profiles ?

It's a bit wierd to talk about printers where all you ever get to see is testcharts and client reports - it's all hearsay

Sorry, no, but I do believe it was one of the threads in these forums. Do a search and try to find it. I believe it was one of the threads that discussed whether inks dried poorly on non-HP papers or not.

My experiences with the HP Advanced Glossy (the papers used for calibration and printhead alignment) paper+profile combo are nothing but good. Previously, when using a print shop with a published profile, all prints came out way too dark, so I had to lighten them up an arbitrary amount. Now my prints seem spot on. I said "seem" because I don't have one of those fancy light boards that have a calibrated 5000 kelvin lamp and a perfect spectrum. I just compared that what the printer spat out with what I had on the monitor, and I saw nothing to complain about.

I found a reference: [a href=\"http://theonlinephotographer.blogspot.com/2006/12/b9180-watch-not-so-swell-papers.html]HP Premium + papers are not compatible with the B9180[/url].

I will check with HP.

OK, HP just confirmed that only Advanced papers are to be used with the B9180, not the premium +.

In addition, Vista drivers should be released soon, whatever that means.
