I've read the manual and the longer loading procedure (not easy paper feed) doesn't involve that many extra steps.  Aside from pushing a few buttons on the front, the procedure is similar to the Epson 4000, except the 4000 loads from the front rather than the back like the HP.

I have an Epson 4800 and 7800 and the 4800 is a pain on fine art cut sheets, though some will feed from the tray. Far easier is the 7800 (and 9800) which is accessible from the front. It doesn't look pretty but it works. Paper handling is just as important as print quality ... as HP is now discovering.

If I'm careful in loading the paper evenly, how difficult is it? 

Specifically, how many misfeeds do you get where you have to load the paper twice?

(2)  The 4000 uses a straight load procedure from the front to the back for fine art sheets where the media is not bent at all. 

By contrast, The Z3100 loads from back and top in a "bent" loading procedure.  I assume it loads from the tray on the top, feeds it out the front to check length and alignment, and then feeds it back to the rear/top tray before printing?

Have you noticed any problems loading heavier media, like Photo Rag 316 or 460 gsm?

There is a knack to it and that is to put it slightly away from the alignmet line which alows it room to auto straighten.  Once the knack is sorted I get no misfeeds  BUT each sheet takes a longer to sort itself than aon my Epson 7500 and you have to press buttons on panel as each sheet loads which means i would never attempt a 100 sheet run.
The economics of roll printing compared with sheet are so good however ass to more than offset any wastage or inconvenience with extra cutting that results.
I have had no prob with HPR 308 A3 cutsheet.

I've used Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 460 with no problems at all. I don't have anything at 500 to try right now.

I wonder if PremierArt Smooth Matte Canvas 550g (24mils) would work?
I was planning on using this canvas when I receive the z3100

I need a seedless very smooth matte canvas

In following this thread I see no comments on the cutters on the new HP or Canon printers.  I use a 7600 and the cuttter will not cut 300 gm paper.  Will the new batch of printers cut these thick art papers and how well do they perform?

The cutter on the Z3100 is great. It has cut Will Turner 310, PR 308, Innova Ftype Gloss, and other thick papers cleanly. Not sure how long cutter life is rated, or the cost of replacement but at least I didn't have to buy a bolt-on cutter like I did with my Epson.
