Pete Turner prints at the Eastman House

I viewed the Pete Turner exhibit at the George Eastman house in Rochester today.  I urge anyone who can visit to do so (ends Feb 4).  Absolutely remarkable prints and display;  all were printed on an inkjet (Epson 3800/luster).

I saw the exhibition in November. Stunning.

However, the web site doesn't do justice to the images or the exhibition. The prints are expertly made and the lighting is perfect. An inspiration for anyone aspiring to make high quality prints and show them well.

How big were the prints?

I bet the colors popped, but was the texture in the Luster paper distracting at all?

How big were the prints (approx)?

They did pop. The prints were large--16"x24" roughly. The 3800 can print 17" wide maximum.

I don't like luster paper because of the surface texture, but in the Turner exhibit I didn't notice the surface at all. The prints had no noticeable gloss or surface texture, and they had very rich colours and deep blacks. The lighting was very well done.

Darrell:

Roy’s recollection is correct.  All prints are approximately 16x24, with the exception of the Life Savers photo which is larger.  Prints are matted with white, with white wood frames.  Lighting is high intensity (halogen?) from above at about 40 degrees.  The walls of the gallery are flat black.  The prints appeared to be the light source in the room and to be illuminated from behind, much as a large transparency would appear.  They did “pop”.  I can tell you I looked at some of the same images on Pete Turner’s website when I returned from the Eastman house.  The images on my super-duper, high resolution LCD screen seemed dull by comparison.  The luster surface was not noticeable under normal viewing conditions.  I did look at the prints from below (about 40 degrees to the vertical), to look for gloss differential.  GD and the sparkle of the luster surface are visible, but I really had to go out of my way to see it.  It was a most impressive display of photographs.

The lighting is SoLux bulbs (a company based in Rochester of all places) which are 12v halogen.

Thanks for the information Roy.  Any reader of this thread who uses your link will get a good idea of the appearance of the gallery; although I must say the reflections in the framing glass weren't nearly as prominent as they appear in the image SoLux used.

Anyone know if this exhibit will travel? If it does, I hope it makes a stop in Minneapolis.
I last saw a Pete Turner exhibit back in the late seventies when he had an exhibit at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. This was close to the time that Cibachrome started to come on the market, but the prints at this show were Type -C prints from his 35mm Kodachromes. Mr. Turner was at the exhibit the day I went and dicovered that at that time he had 8x10 internegs made by a lab in New York(Berkley K&L I believe) and the prints were made from them. The prints were large, bold in color and just terrific to view. Convinced me on the spot that you could get quality from 35mm. Remember, this was back in the seventies, and unless you had a 'Blad or a view camera, you couldn't do anything of "quality" with a 35mm. Photographers like Turner, Jay Maisel and Eric Meola changed that.
