Custom Profile for the 3800
« on: January 02, 2007, 11:01:48 pm »

Hey all,

I just bought a 3800 and am getting really good results, however the perfectionist in me is always wanting allitle better.   Are the profiles that come with the 3800 good enough not to worry about a custom profile, or should I invest in getting some done?  I don't have the hardware to create custom profile and would be having someone do these for me.  Anyone who has had good luck with getting profiles done please let me know who you used if you thought it worth it.

Thanks!!!!

Epson canned profiles are pretty good, but my clients have repeatedly noted an increase in shadow detail with my custom profiles. This was on other 800 series machines, I have no first hand experience yet of the 3800. I use Monaco Profiler with a DTP 70 spectro mainly, and cannot speak for results with Profile Maker Pro which many other consultants are employing.

Most of the profile folks domestically use GMB Profiler Maker Pro. I had a fellow in Austria I met in an on-line user forum make some for me a while back using what Edmund specified, and from what I noticed, the Monoco system did seem to open shadows up a bit. As to why the US market has more folks using The GMB system as compared to the European market, I do not know. The canned 3800 profiles are pretty darn good from what I have noticed so far, but now knowing what Edmund is using, he will cetainly be on my list when it comes to getting profiles for unsupported papers made that my i1Pro and Match3 just can't seem nail down when I make my own.

My experience mimic's Edmund's. The US Canned profiles are very good. I built a custom profile using 4096 patches in ProfileMaker Pro, it's better but nothing earth shattering. If money is an object, you could get away with the canned profiles and unless you printed a custom profiled image side by side, few would care. But if you're interested in the last ounce of quality the printer can muster, you want a custom profile. Of course, I didn't compare every canned profile paper combo with custom. For Luster, there's a difference but again, the canned profiles are impressive for canned profiles!

Xrite's Monaco Profiler does make a nice profile. I don't know how well Profile Maker Pro compares, but I have been using Profiler for about a year now. If you are considering buying a system, then i1 Photo is currently the recommended mid grade system. You might want to check out Argyll CMS if you already have a measuring device.

The cheap Pulse systems at Adorama are almost gone (for what it's worth).

PROFILER and the DTP-70 are what Epson USA used to build the Pro profiles they supply. All off the shelf goodies.

I set up my 3850 (Asia's 3800) this morning ;-) and printed three photos to test the colour output.

my subjects are birds and the colours are relatively vivid. with Colour Controls turned off and using the Epson supplied profile from within the photo application, the bird's green colours were mirky/dull by comparison. I guess I'll have to get custom profiles done.

but... the output from the printer is wonderful, much much better than the output from my 1290; at least to this non-professional's eyes.

regards,
Gregory

Gregory - do you want to try a comparison?  I'll print your file and mail it to you, or perhaps see you in HK.  Just got back from Brissie, and I'm not travelling much over the next two weeks.

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to this forum but I saw this thread about the 3800/3850. I'm also in HK. Can someone confirm that the 3800 is the same as the 3850 ? Also can you advise if you know of a recommended retailer and what sort of price I can expect to pay in HK ?

I was also looking at the Epson R2400. Looks like it has the same inks but you have to switch between different black cartridges manually in order to get correct matte/glossy...

Any help would be appreciated.

I purchased my 3850 in early January. it's a great printer, at least compared to the 1290 I owned previously.

I purchased mine at my regular Mac reseller in Windsor House, Causeway Bay but they don't carry a lot of Epson equipment. when I purchased my printer, it was not yet advertised in Hong Kong and I had to wait a few weeks to get it; not the reseller's problem, Epson's problem. supply shouldn't be a problem right now.

I was in Golden Building, Shum Shui Po today to buy Epson paper (it's *really* hard to buy here in Hong Kong. practically no one keeps stock and even Epson itself apparently has no Premium Semi-gloss paper left in stock, and Lustre paper will never be available in Hong Kong!). the reseller was very friendly and helpful. I asked how much they sell the printer for; HK$9,550. that should give you an idea. the shop was Comdex, shop 49 1/F Golden Computer Ctr. ask for Jennifer; ph 96502449.
