Hasselblad 100mm vs 80mm HC
« on: December 25, 2006, 12:19:13 am »

I was curious if anyone has compared the hasselblad 80mm and 100mm HC lenses head to head preferably with a digital back.  I am curious what the major differences were. I have looked at the MTF graphs and not sure I can make any specific conclusions.

I own both and I find the resolution of both lenses are similar although my 80 had to have it's focus reset to bring it up to spec.

The 100mm f2.2 is heavy for it's size but wonderfully bright in the viewfinder and the pictures look so gorgeous at wide open.

Damien.  How much difference is there in the bokeh, and narrow DOF.

I would really appreciate some good examples with it wide open, if possible. Perhaps a link to a website with images? Thanks in advance.

It shows how far Hasselblad has come with the Fuji H lenses versus the Zeiss V lenses (and I say that as a V system user). With the V system the image quality difference between the 80mm and 100mm is substantial, with the H system both the 80mm and the 100mm seem to deliver the same stunning results.

Gary which 100mm V system lens are you using?  The 100/3.5 CFI?

I've been away and I'm off again later so hence the quick reply and no time to post pictures. The 100 f2.2 is unique. Nothing like the 80 f2.8 in any way. The 100mm is a portrait lens and is flattering. The 80mm is a general purpose lens. The pictures look completely different. Go for a hire before you buy option to check it out for yourself. I find the H series lenses better all round than my CF lenses. Less bells and whistles (depth of field tables, close focus compensation rings etc) but nicer pictures from corner to corner. My H35mm knocks the spots off my 40mm CFE. Other users of the 35mm have been less impressed. I recon there is a lot of production variation in quality.

Damien.

I was able to do some comparisons today between the 80 and 100 HC.  I think the sharpness and contrast are very similar at the various apertures. However, I would say the bokeh at f2.2 is more pleasing than a similar shot taken with the 80mm at f2.8. mark
