HELP ipf 8000 looks like banding?
« on: December 17, 2006, 02:19:30 pm »

A freind of mine just hooked it up, and it looks like it is banding. I have tried a head alingment, head cleaning, and auto band adjustment. Especially where there is a gradient from dark to light, you see it. I am testing on Epson semi gloss paper. Any suggestions? please help!!

The guys at ColorHQ where I purchased my printer told me to always use unidirectional printing because bidirectional printing caused visible banding in the shadows.  From the Canon IPF5000 Wiki:

"To select Unidirectional printing in the Photoshop plugin, select the Main tab, then click on the Set button under the Media Type dropdown box. There is a checkbox in the lower left corner of the dialog box where you can select Unidirectional printing. For optimal color accuracy when making custom profiles, it is probably best to select Unidirectional when printing out the target, since these subtle changes have been reported to affect colors on other printers."

Also, are you printing from the plugin or through the Windows (or Mac) printer driver?

Recommend visiting the Wiki (which also has a Discussion Forum):

[a href=\"http://www.canonipf5000.wikispaces.com]http://www.canonipf5000.wikispaces.com[/url]

Please let me know the final outcome so I can add to the Wiki if different than the suggestion given above.

Is the banding throughout the image, or only at the very bottom?  There is one Wiki entry re: banding in the last half inch (subtle, though).

Otherwise, sounds like it is time for a call to Canon tech support.  Sorry.

Edit:  One other thought.  What is the ppi you are sending to the printer?  I resize to 600 ppi in Photoshop (bicubic smoother) before going to the plugin.   The plugin uses nearest neighbor resizing by default (although you can set bilinear).  It is possible this could make a difference, although probably not the cause.

Couple of other thoughts:

1) Have you printed a nozzle check to make sure all the nozzles are firing properly after  head cleaning?  Does it look OK?

2) Horizontal or vertical banding?

3) Can you describe the banding?  Subtle?  Very obvious?

4) Can you tell me what settings you are using for Media Type, Input Resolution, Input Bits, Auto color or profile, etc you are using on the Main page of the plugin?

5) Would you open up the GARO status monitor, select Info tab and click on Status Display?  I would be interested in seeing the Head Adjust settings listed.  You can copy and post them here.

I wouldn't be too worried about getting "the newest".  There are posts from others running IPF8000 and IPF9000 that are running just great.  You just have to figure out if there is something wrong with your printer or a lack of knowledge about how to use it.  Keep us posted.

I am coming over from a Epson9800 so yes, this is new to me. It does not seem complicated though but may be I am missing something

Chris,

The thing that strikes me about the the head alignment data is that there are NO adjustments.  I have the opposite concern, that the adjustments in the "C" band seem awfully large (alternating between 0 and -28 for instance).  I don't know that mine is abnormal (and haven't seen any image quality problems), but would be concerned that yours couldn't possibly be right.  How could it be that no adjustment is required when head alignment is done?  Your values are all zero.  That would suggest that everything is so perfect that no adjustment is needed, or that in some way the head alignment isn't "taking".  Remember that these are just my thoughts based on what information I have available.

Edit: Did you do the Standard or Advanced head alignment?  I don't know the difference, just curious.

My values follow:

Perhaps.  It wastes a bit of paper, but otherwise not much reason not to try it again.  I wish I knew the difference between standard and advanced head alignment.  There is also a Manual head alignment, which it might be worth doing (I have never tried this) if the auto head alignment isn't working properly.  Access the manual head alignment from the Printer Control Panel:

1) Menu button
2) Select Adjust Printer
3) Select Manual Head Adjust

Let me know.

Quite a different result!  Why the difference in the adjust length?  Was this after you did the Auto Banding Adjustment?  Why Media Type of HW Coated?  Was this just for doing the alignment?  What kind of paper did you use to do the head alignment?

Do the prints look any better?

Yes, but do the prints look any better after the second alignment?  I know when I did a re-alignment (just because I was curious) the values listed came out extremely close to the first set.  Thus I would expect that this re-alignment may have fixed your problem.

Also, there is some discussion that the paper used may have an effect on the alignment procedure.  Canon support has said "Any paper", but have also received info from them that a paper close to what you plan to print on may work better, and specifically that a glossy or similar RC paper MAY provide a more accurate alignment.  We are in the area of speculation here, so take with a grain of salt.

I am completely out of ideas.  Haven't seen this problem reported before for IPF5000.  Don't know about IPF8000.  I checked to see if there is a later Firmware update for the IPF8000, nothing listed on Canon USA.

Time to call Canon support tomorrow AM.  May be time for a service call to see if something is wrong with the printer.  You can also try posting on the Epson Wide Format group on Yahoo.  Several people there have either the IPF8000 or IPF9000 and might be able to help.

Let us know the resolution of this problem so we can add to FAQ.

Have you done the manual band adjustment. I found on the iPF9000 I had to do it manually to fix banding, but that was with heavy banner material.
