This is bugging me too, to the extent that I don´t use that part of LR at present. I need to be able to specify a size up to at least 600 - 700 pix, and I want it SQUARE, i e same max height for verticals as the maximum width for horizontals. I can get that in PSCS2; I want it in LR as well, since it would be so much easier to assemble a web gallery directly.
Manipulating the LR templates is beyond my abilities, I´m afraid (I can do it in PSCS2). And, yes, I know this should be a feature request in the Adobe forum; rest assured, it is already, long ago and from several users. But a bit of nagging never hurts

A few days later, I found a workaround in the Adobe discussion forums. Here´s the URL (not sure it works unless you´re a registered user there):

Anyway, poster "digiology" said that if you increase the number of cells in the index grid, the size of the large image gets bigger (it seems the size ot the grid defines the "window" used both for the grid and the single images, and that´s what´s needed... ).
Obviously, this must be a bug; a big, black, six-legged one! In any case, it seems to solve the problem until the bug gets squashed. BTW, setting a more square grid size does give a square picture window, just as I wanted.
Digiology, whoever you may be, you made my day! Thanx!
