raw conversion from db's.
« on: December 01, 2006, 12:34:02 pm »

Hi,
Just a quick question here.

Am I correct in assuming that the raw files from the various digital backs can only be processed with the manufacturers own software..i.e phase one back files with c1, leaf files with leaf software etc.?

So a programme like aperture, lightroom etc can only process raw files from the various dslr's?

Thanks.

Hi Marc

That is not the case.

The raw files from DB can be processed in many different programs.
Some in more than others. And more programs you can  use
is added all the time.

so as an example I am trialling out aperture and raw support list showes all the usual suspects of dslr's but no db's...am I missing something?

Is this just aperture or is lightroom the same?
Is it just these types of programmes that are more than pure raw converters that are like this?

Marc

Go to www.apple.com/aperture/raw/cameras.html for a listing of supported cameras

No digital backs are mentioned, specifically, but Aperture is compatible with the .DNG
format (provided it is converted via the Adobe converter and not captured,or created,
natively from within a DB's dedicated software).

James Russel, and others on this site, have mentioned processing Leaf and Phase One files
in Lightroom but i don't recall if they were processing the files in their  DB's native raw format
or were working with DNG files

Marc

FYI,I just launched Lightroom and imported a number of different DB files.

Leafs Aptus22 and Aptus75 files are supported in their native .mos (uncompressed) format

Phase P25 and P45 files are also supported in their native format

Files from the Imacon/Hasselblad 132c and CF39  (in either of their native .fff or .3FR formats)
are greyed out in Lightrooms Import window.

I have Lightroom Beta 4.0 installed.  There is an incremental upgrade after 4.0 available
but I don't believe the upgrade had anything to do with adding additional file formats.

For Hasselblad files it would appear you would have to convert to .DNG

Hello Marc,
the Adobe series of software supports teh raw format of many digi backs and "generic" DNG, so does Raw Developer.

Aperture doesn't.
Apple claims to support DNG, but when you read the small print, you will notice that they only support DNG files of devices which have a raw format supported by Aperture.

So it is of no help to used Adobes DNG converter to convert any digi back file to DNG, because Aperture will not be ablte to handle it, despite the fact that the DNG file format is designed as a device independent format.

When time comes, Aperture might support digi backs, but this time isn't today.

Raw Developer converts both Phase and Leaf files.

Mark:
I have been able to take files from an Hasselblad H3D-39, import them into Flexcolor, and then export them as DNGs out of Flexcolor that will open in ACR and presumably Lightroom. However, my understanding(I have not confirmed it) is that the DNG that comes out of Flexcolor that you can open in ACR does not carry any digital software-based lens correction that you performed in Flexcolor. It's a raw RAW file. And therein lies the unforunate gap. As of now, you will apparently not be able to use Lightroom (or ACR or Aperture)in your workflow as a raw converter if you want to be able to use certain capabilities of the H3D-39. These require Flexcolor. It would be great if Lightroom or Aperture could open the Hasselblad files directly and perform the digital lens correction stuff on the Hasselblad raw files, but then allow you to use the rest of the Lightroom tools for processing the raw files. I am not holding my breath.

The workflow I've seen with digital backs involved capturing the images using the native raw convertor, saving/converting them as a batch or real time,  and then writing them to an import directory. For tethered shooting you can script automatic pick up and delivery into Aperture as TIFF files.
