Epson 7800 - Sheet Paper Frustration
« on: December 01, 2006, 11:02:53 am »

I have had the 7800 for about a year and the only time I am happy with it is when I am making 24X36 prints.  Which is probably once every few months.

The other times, I am making proofs for clients, usually no bigger than 11X14.  I am so tired of having to manually feed each sheet.  I don't like using rolls except when I have to because it's such a pain in the rear to straighten them.

Am I missing something or should I have gone with the 4800?  I have an upcoming holiday LTD Edition of 50 and it sure would be easy to set the que and let 'em crank out.

Any advice or should I give up on the big guy?

Thanks,
Randal

Suggestion:  Epson 3800, 4800 or Canon IPF5000.  I don't know of any solution to your problem.  For a comparison of these printers to help you decide which is best for you  see:

Disclosure: I bought the Canon IPF5000 and created the Wiki.  I have no financial interest in any printer company, and haven't invested in any ink futures :-)

That's the thing with the 7800: if you want unattended batch operation, you need to use rolls. If you don't like rolls, then I'd argue the 7800 isn't for you. Like John said, consider the alternatives with a big sheet feeder.

If you only print 24" wide every few months, consider sending out the big 24" prints to a lab like West Coast Imaging, Calypso, or Pictopia.

General suggestion is to get a printer that is optimized for your common printing needs (i.e., day-to-day prints), not for the occasional print.

Cheers,

That is one thing I have always loved about the HP dj 130 printers - you get the 24" roll but also 18 x 24 sheet TRAY all at the same time. Seems like a simple solution, and I don't know why the other folks - and now HP - will not incorporate this into their 24" printers (HP has abandoned this for some reason on their new series so they are roll-only, or one at a time). I don't know of a 24" pigmet printer with a tray, but I would love one if/when someone ever comes out with one. Maybe the new Canon 24" printer will just be a larger version of the 17"?

thanks for the advice.  Looks like I am going to sell my 7800 and go to the 4800.  Most of most work is proofing for commercial clients.

thanks for the help.

Know anybody who wants to buy a 7800?
