Possible damage to Canon lenses?
« on: November 28, 2006, 03:20:01 pm »

Recently my new Canon 5D and three Canon lenses dropped from my backpack camera bag onto asphalt. I sent the camera to Canon to have a small dent repaired. But I have not sent the lenses to Canon for evaluation. Images taken with the lenses seem to be fine.

My insurance company says that they will pay to have them evaluated. Should I send them to Canon for evaluation? Doing so would make me rest better, hearing that "all is well". Lenses are very delicate instruments, and it would seem that falling 5' onto asphalt would have done some damage.

Is that a rhetorical question? If it is not going to cost you anything to get the lenses checked then it is worth doing. The lenses may be knocked out of alignment with any sharp impact - as with all mechanical devices it is worth getting things checked out if they have been involved in an impact. Even if the probability is low of anything being damaged you will have peace of mind at least - and even if nothing was damaged you can still ask Canon to do a tune up and perhaps improve the performance of the lens compared with prior to dropping them.
