Epson 3800 and paper

I'm looking at getting an Epson 3800 as soon as possible. Anybody know the release date? I was considering ordering it at B&H.

Also, for B&W, it seems the favorites are Crane Museo Silver Rag or Innova F-Type FibaPrint Gloss Ultra Smooth. Any comments on either of these?

The 3800 is awesome (I've had one a few weeks). Can't comment on the papers. I'm a Premium Luster man. The canned profiles with the Epson papers are really great if that's an incentives to stick with their stuff.

You know you are the only one in the US that has one LOL.  We are all chomping at the bit to get ours.  The reports from the European folks are great also.

I'm interested in getting this printer, but I'm most concerned about the gamut in dark flesh tones and dark greens. I've just always hated the way my 6 ink epsons printed these colors. Does the 3800 do well in this regard? I'm not concerned with the bright, saturated stuff that most people think of as "gamut"...

The whole line up of the K3 printers have a much better total volume of colors (particularly in deep saturated color) than any of the previous Ultrachrome or earlier inks. So, yes, the 3800 will be better in deep color than any 6 color printer.

You should follow this thread, which discusses the papers you are considering. I don't like the Fiba Gloss because of the stipple. The Crane's is nice and has a softer, warmer print statement. The Hahnemühle Fine Art Pearl performs well and is a brighter sheet. It all depends on what you're printing!

Canon promised to send me one to test but they dont seem to have their act together in this respect compared to Epson. At Photoshop World, one of the Canon PM's promised one for testing and I suggested he send one to Mac Holbert at Nash Editions as well since there's few others who could put a printer through it's paces better than Mac. Our emails went into a Canon black hole. So I can't comment on the differences other than the few targets I've received from others that I've measured (and wondered about the severe delta in the values).
