Epson 7800 & Piezo Pro Matte Canvas
« on: November 23, 2006, 03:45:03 PM »

Hello, I am new to this forum so forgive me if I'm posting incorrectly or take awhile to respond as I don't use many forums.  My spelling is also poor, sorry.

I currently shoot with the Nikon D2X and print on Epson 7800.  I have recently begun using the Epson Piezo Pro Matte Canvas and have some very nice prints at 20X30 and 20X72".  For some prints I think the canvas prints are more appropriate than even the premium luster 250 paper by Epson... needless to say I really like working with canvas.

However, I have noticed while printing via Photoshop CS2 that the Epson 7800 will waste up to 6-8" of canvas each time I try to print unless I use the manual cutter and "force" the paper to rewind back into the printer (if this is making any sense).  I do not have this problem with my Epson premium luster 250 paper and auto-cut enabled?  Out of a 40 foot roll I could easily get one more 20X30 print from what my printer is wasting!

Any suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

In the Epson print dialog under the "paper" tab, you can set a custom paper (or canvas) size.  In this way you can set say a paper size of 24x34 (you actually set dimensions in 1/100ths of an inch, so it would be 2400x3400) and print a 20x30 image on it. Click "centered" in the main Epson box and also in the last CS dialog and the image will be pretty well centered and have a nice 1" border all the way around the image.

Cheers,

Even if you set up custom sizes it still advances and you have to manually bring the canvas (or any other fine art paper) up. Setting up custom sizes does not fix this.

I too would like a solution to this, it's the same with the 9800.

I had the same problem with my 9800. The way I solved it was to set the paper to sheet on the control panel of the printer. Once it has loaded and is ready to print change the setting back to roll. Your waste will be minimal now

Thanks for the responses, emailing Epson to see what they have to say about the whole situation, when I get an "offical" answer I will let everyone know what it is... not that I am expecting much to be honest.  I will certainly try the sheet feed method to see if that helps.

I do set specific sizes for each print, and I get the extra margin as I want, however the silly machine still rolls out approximately 8" too much PRIOR to printing... very wasteful and annoying.

On the 7800 and the 9800 in the printer setup menu you can turn off "Paper size check" and "Paper skew check", with these off you have to be carefull that the media is loaded correctly and with the paper source set to roll paper cutter off, after using the manual cutter or cutting the media use the paper up button to return the media to the print position,, you should then have only the margins set in the printer setup menu.

Found out from Epson that I need to leave cut paper on at the machine (on the display) and then turn the auto cut off on the software and this should solve the problem... but haven't been in town (where my printer is) to test it out... hopefully next week.  Thanks for all the help on this forum.

For anyone that needs to know I found out what works.  You leave the roll paper and autocut selection on at the printer and then turn the cut paper off in the software/driver just before you print.  Then the paper is rolled back into the 7800 at the correct position and if you want a 2" boarder you get a 2" boarder!

Again, leave roll paper and autocut selected on the printer, but disable autocut in the printer software before printing (Epson printer software that is).
