One more Mamiya ZD sample
« on: November 22, 2006, 10:34:56 pm »

Dear all,

Another Mamiya ZD full size sample.

This was developped with the newly released RAW DEvelopper 1.6 by trying to maximize sharpness. Those concerned by painterly effects or digital look need not be worried it seems. Other RAW converters have a harder time with these files though, Raw Developper really appears to be head and shoulder above the competition per my first tests.

Thanks Bernard. Which ISO did you use?
Was there any noise reduction used during or after conversion?
Thanks.

It was shot at 50 ISO, and I mostly disable all noise reduction functions in RD. Nothing was done on noise afterwards.

On a final image, I would prhaps spend a bit more time getting rid of the noise in some areas, and would also selectively work on sharpness to have smoother edges etc...

There noise that is present in this image would IMHO mostly not show in print, and could be easily gotten rid of anyway.

Bernard

Hi
I just got the new update for RD, is there much difference between 1.5 & 1.6? 1.5 has been giving me outstanding results with my ZD. I wish he had made a more contrasty profile also for the ZD as I find the file too flat for portraits. I have created one based on a Gretag McBeth chart which is better. I am so used to the Leaf software with the different profiles. But the ZD at iso 50 is really clean. Its funny I used to use 35mm for film and now I the ZD & Aptus 22 in digital while my Canon 5D doesn't get used much. I could send some screen shots of the profile I created with RD for the ZD if anyone is interested.
Thanks Denis

Hi
We have had great experiences with the Mamiya ZD camera. The attached image was shot under less than ideal conditions...in front of a live audience at the annual Photo trade show here in Sydney. This was processed with the Mamiya software and retouched.  We've moved on to using RD instead of the Mamiya software.  We wish we had two of these cameras...
Cheers, Denis

Mcphoto, I don't suppose you'd be willing to post a larger version of that image?
Thanks.

I can only assume that you've never seen heat haze before ...

Hi
I just looked at the balloon picture and that is heat from whatever those ballons (burning fuel) use. That has nothing to do with the camera.
Thanks Denis

It is a bit noisy indeed, but I prefer this than an ugly painterly look for my landscape applications.

I am still very new with the ZD and RD, I am confident a better compromise can be found.

Cheers,
Bernard

no, I'm talking about the the balloon with the magenta and blue stripes, on the right edge of the balloon. The lines on that balloon contain alot of jaggies.

cheers

If it was jaggies, then it would be on both sides and not cease half way down side of balloon. It's heat haze and pixels are swirly, not jaggy!

Gosh, Bernard! I can't even read the maker's name on the ballpoint pen the third guy from the top has in his shirt pocket!

Very impressive. I don't think my Canon 5D could do that.

I know, I think I'll return the ZD... lucky this shot hadn't been commisioned by the ballpoint manufacturer, they'd be real mad...

Hi
That is heat coming form the burned gas from that balloon. If you go down to the blue/yellow balloon behind the trees you will see the same heat effect.
On the second image what lens did you use for the snow shot? I do have a RD curve that you moght be interested in, it has more contrast and I think it is better for portraits. I find the default ZD RD profile a little flat and brings out detail in portraits ( shadows ) That I don't want.
Thanks Denis

That was shot with the 300 mm f4.5.

Yes, I'd be interested in your RD curve! Could you please send it to me by email?

Thank you in advance,

Hi Bernard

Here is the profile I created on our Quato monitor. I still think it needs improvement as it is a little warm for skin tones. But it has a nice contrast. This was created on a GTM colour chart shot with flash. Or if other ZD users are on MAC give it a go as you can download RD as a working demo. You will need OS 10.4 to run this software. I use this profile for portraits as it is a better starting point for our style.

Thanks Denis
