Thailand, Phuket locations
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:46:10 am »

I thought that it would be better to ask you guys here than either harvesting the net or trying to discover on-location. So, I'm going for a two-week vacation to Phuket in January. If my memory serves me right (I'm letting my girlfriend handle the planning :), we're staying at either Karon Beach or Kata Beach.

So, has anyone been here, is there something in particular one should photograph? Thus far I had planned to try and do some plain ol' street photography of the locals, even though they are 'touristified' locals.

Sorry if this is a repost.

I was there a few years ago.  Phuket itself is mostly just beach resort, but with a car or a boat you can get some really cool places.  We took a boat/kayak tour around the islands in the bay that was spectacular.  A couple of photos from it to show you:

We arranged the boat tour through our hotel, and I imagine any decent-sized resort hotel could do the same.  I hope the islands weren't too trashed by the tsunami that came through a year or so ago...

With a car, there are a couple of excellent jungle parks on the mainland north of Phuket with hiking trails.  I can try to look up the names of them when I get home tonight.  We saw giant lizards, a six-foot-long snake, a bat cave, and wild elephant footprints.

The two good parks on the mainland were Khao Lak National Park (along the coast highway something like an hour or two north of Phuket) and Sa Nang Manora Forest Park (just north of Phang Nga town).

Thanks for the info! I'll write the names down and try to get some shots from there.
