Mamiya AFDII battery ?
« on: October 20, 2006, 03:58:30 pm »

Hi folks,

If I use a Mamiya AFDII with a Phase back, does the camera itself get power from the back ? If not, where does it get power from, and can one use rechargeable batteries ?

Hi

The AFD II has its batteries in the grip. ( 6 AA Batteries). I've tried with rechargeable AA's but it doesn't work. The Phase back has it's own battery in the back.

I use mine with a Leaf Aptus 22 and a Leaf Hard drive attached to the bottom which has its own batteries that power the back with a short Firewire cable.

The AFD II Digital back combination is great since it communicates all functions through the interface, it's a completely integrated solution.

I tried the H2 and I didn't feel it it gave me twice as much for twice the cost. I went with the AFD and I'm very happy. I use the same back on a RZ Pro II with the Leaf interface plate. Works great as well.

I have had a loaner untill the arrival of my Aptus 65 today...the loaner was a 75....I needed more speed and the difference of 31x41 and 36x48 was not that important to me....

The loaner was an H2....too many electronics (even to change from AF to MF what a pain)...on the 2nd day of my 3 day shoot my zoom lens gave up.....with multiple lens errors....luckily I was close to the rental place.... but had to shoot with the standard lens until my assistant exchanged the lens.

I like to keep it simple....and digital photography makes me more of a computer programmer than a photographer...so the AFDII is the way to go....however I liked the way the H2 rested in my hand...the deep grip with enough space for you fingers is great.....the rest of the camera....no my taste....

Now I am shooting with a 645AFDII and a RZ67 proII....so I got the best of both worlds (just my 2cents)

That is funny, I used rechargeable Ni-MH AA batteries on my AFD II and AFD and I don't have any problems with them, with the P45 back.

You're right. It works, I tried again with new batteries.

A question since you're shooting with a RZ: Does your RZ underexpose compared to the AFD with studio strobes and handheld Lightmeter?
I have to compensate my AFD by about 1 stop and the RZ 2 stops compared to my lightmeter. The same reading is dead on with my Canon 1Ds. I tried two different lightmeters.
Does anyone else experience this?

Thanks

I haven't really used my RZ yet.....besides a couple of testshots...and I think you are right..the test shots came out a little darker than with the AFDII...but I have to test this with strobes.

My AFDII is right on the money compared to my Ds1MkII...becausewhen I measure F8 and shoot this on my AFDII the exposure is perfect...I have to go to F10 on my Ds1MkII for the same exposure.
Will test the RZ today during my shoot and get back to you with my results tonite..

okay tested my RZ with the 65 back...and it is a little darker, maybe 1/2 stop or less....compared to my AFDII.

I also tested re chargable batteries today.....duracells and they worked like a charm...shot about 800 shots and no re charging needed.

there is a tabel on the camera

but you'll probably know .. and i feel stupid :-/

Underexposure is not my biggest problem with my afd2. I use the histogram to finetune the metering. But.....

These are all shot with the same shutterspeed/apterture..  (1/115 f14 according to exif)
