Double sided inkjet matte papers
« on: October 19, 2006, 04:10:23 pm »

Hello.  I'm new to the forum, but I thought this might be a good place to get a question answered.

I'm about to print my portfolio which consists mainly of commercial people photography.  I'm using an Epson 2200 and am trying to find the perfect paper.  The catch is that it has to be double sided.  I've lately been using the hahnemule 308gsm photo rag which does excellent, but it's not double sided.  The only double sided paper I've found is the Moab Entrada Bright White.  However this paper is only OK in comparison to the photo rag.  I know that Hahnemule has introuduced the pearl satin paper in a double sided form.  I was curious to know if anyone has done any printing on this and would it be a good paper to use in a portfolio?  The portfolio will not have sleeves, so people will be turning pages of the exact prints.

I'm also open to any other recommendations of what might work well.  Need's to be double sided though.

Thanks

InkJetArt has a number of dual sided papers listed here.  I think they will do sample packs.

Take a look at Premier Art Smooth Hot Press Fine Art Paper
http://www.premierimagingproducts.com/pm_smoothhp.php
The only problem with it is that it's not as bright white as the Hahnemule paper.  One issue with the Hahnemuhle paper is that the surface is delicate.  I discovered this after printing a book using the Photo rag duo.  I ended up not using it because the pages became scratched and marred to easily.   I'd print a few test images and subject them to the wear and tear that a portfolio book would be subject to.  I'd also look into using a protective spray to coat which ever paper you end up using.  Moab and Premier Art both make a spray.

If you are using the Moab paper with profiles downloaded from the Moab's web site, consider having a custom profile made. I have not had good experience personally using their profiles on the Entrada. You might also consider the Natural version of the Entrada.

Another dual-sided paper is Moab's Kokopelli Dual-Sided Semi-Gloss. It's not a matte paper, though.

I'll second this - it's nearly as good as the twice as expensive Arches Infinity, and a bit easier to deal with.

I have used double sided papers from Ink Jet Art, Red River Paper, and Hawk Mountain Art Papers in both regular papers and the fine art papers.
inkjetart.com, redriverpaper.com, hawkmtnartpapers.com.

I use mostly double side papers since it allows me to use the reverse side if the print doesn't print properly on on side.
The coating I believe also protects the back of the paper so the print isn't aged/attacked from the back side because the paper is "open."

To take this the next step, if texture, coating, color, etc. is different, different profiles are needed for each side.
