Canon Raw Vs Capture one
« on: October 18, 2006, 01:41:38 pm »

Dear Fellow Hobbyists,

I am attaching a photo i took of my 7mth daugter using a Canon G3.
I usually process the RAW photos using Canon's RAW processing software.
recently i got access to Capture one which i used to process the one of the RAW images.

I see stark difference in the processing of both the softwares.
The canon output seems appealing sometimes, but the capture one seems
"real". i see canon enhances "red" whereas capture one looks a bit bland.

Please help analyse the two jpgs of the same photo i am attaching to this post.
Could you help me understand which of these is correct technically and
subjectively?

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Rishi

Canon Raw Vs Capture one

The differences you are seeing (including the reds) are mostly due to the different default tonality (contrast) treatment of the two converters. With C1, try the "extra contrast" curve (if it has one of the G3) or set the black point slider up a bit and tweak the contrast up, and I bet it'll look a lot closer to the default Canon version.

It's difficult to compare two raw converters based on default settings with a single image, particularly an image like this one. DPP has its (tonality) defaults tuned differently than C1 and without tweaking it is natural that some images will look better with one and some with the other. They are both very good raw converters.
