I recommend you take a look at the Sony R1. Great lense. live hiustogram, live preview, APS sized CMOS (10.3mp), RAW capable (though small buffer), Digicam (though a bit larger then most). Use as my primary after looking at all the DSLRs and hearing everyones techno talk. And as an added benefit you can probably pick on up in the $700/800 range now. Prints to 13x19 w/o any image degradation.

You can refer to my website for image quality: www.mitchdobrowner.com

Good luck with your search. - Mitch

If the R1, then hurry.  There is very little stock left, since Sony is essentially eliminating it from the lineup to prevent competition for their DSLR.  It will also humiliate any of the cameras mentioned till now, for sheer image quality from its APS sized sensor.  Fast focusing in low light is not its forte though.

Its luscious 24-120mm equiv Carl Zeiss lens is its biggest asset, especially since it covers the entire APS imaging circle.  All the others mentioned till now are small-sensored cameras and thus cannot compare in any way, shape or form to the image quality of the R1.

I sill haven't found a camera in this category that I prefer over the Panasonic LC1/Leica Digilux 2. It's "only" a 5mp camera, but it shoots RAW, has good manual controls and an outstanding lens. There are things I could quibble about (lack of optical viewfinder, lack of RAW buffer), but I have yet to find a replacement that I like better.
